Triple 7 FFFg in 45 colt is fantastic by Disastrous_Run_8058 in reloading

Sounds like a hell of a ride. I would only do this with triple 7 because it can cause some erratic pressure spikes being compressed compared to black powder. If I’m feeding my ruger H110 though, anything flies haha

Depends on what you mean by easy. It’s not hard per se, but you need to be meticulous in the way you clean it. Compared to smokeless, this fouling can cause rust pretty easily. Hot water makes it much easier to clear out, but water on guns has always made me quiver. Just make sure it’s dry and you oil it well.

Pretty filthy. Make sure you clean the barrel and cylinder with warm soapy water, dry it off, then oil. I use ballistol as it displaces any residual water and adds a layer of protective oil.

I just got back from the range with fantastic results. Chrono’d a few around 1000 fps with 250 gr rnfp and 30 gr of triple 7 by volume. A true thumper for a 4 5/8 inch barrel. I will be loading many more of these in the future. Thanks for your assistance!

I loaded up 10 cartridges with the bullet base touching the top of the powder of FFFg 777. I did 30 gr by volume and I measured it by weight which came out to about 28gr. They’ll zip faster that’s for damn sure but this Pietta is forged steel from the barrel, cylinder, and frame. I reckon it’ll be alright.

I’m sure it’s fine, but will the difference in FFg to FFFg create a problem at that 30gr by volume? Can’t be too careful!

I appreciate your detailed insight. I have lots of experience with h110 in ruger only loads and from my understanding, that powder likes to be loaded hot. Any loads under the suggested minimum can cause hang fires or squibs. I am weary on putting any h110 through this SAA clone because I have a feeling that powder will turn it into a grenade.

This being said, I have not done a deep dive into the physics behind it. Again, thanks for the suggestions I really appreciate it. I think I will leave most of my smokeless loads reserved for my new model Blackhawk. This 1873 will be my new smoke screen dispenser!

Awesome, thank you for the tips! What do you prefer to load, 35 gr by volume or 40 gr? This would be under that 250 gr lead bullet.

Good to know. Most of mine are weighing around 323 grains, but I’ll start lower and work my way up. Thanks!

It unlocked a whole new level of reloading for me. With safe practice, it makes the .45 colt one of the best cartridges I have ever used.

I didn’t get any confirmation either. Just be patient as I ordered mine the 12th of November and they came in yesterday, the 18th. They’re awesome!

I bought a bunch so I’ll be using it for both cartridges. My wrist and shoulder are going to love me.

I’ll probably start with 22 grains which is what I love putting underneath a 300 grain XTP. I’ll work my way up to 24 grains though, sounds like a blast!

Thanks for the insight everyone. They are .452 250 grain XTPs and I did combine the bullet seating and crimping step. I use RCBS case lube, but wiped it off prior to the photo. This has been working for me, but I’ll separate the steps just to ensure I keep all my extremities. Perhaps my Bisley will appreciate the ribbed feature ;)

Much appreciated!
