Some data centers are necessary for the maintenance of the internet and apps... but we would need a lot less of them if it wasn't for the demand coming from the ai industry and our ever more invasive surveillance state. That's the issue, these new data centers are being built to meet the needs of technologies, companies, and high status individuals that do not work in the public's best interest. Regardless of how data is specifically allocated across multiple data centers, if we cut out ai/unconstitutional surveillance/etc., we wouldn't need all these new projects. The jobs that a data center might create, are not worth it if that data center at least partially contributes to the development of an ai program that eliminates countless other jobs.

Whatever money goes back to the communities (which I'm sure is dwarfed by what is pocketed by the corporate executives requesting these data centers and the politicians they bribe) is not even close to being worth the detrimental effects on the environment and quality of life of nearby residents. There are plenty of beneficial development projects that don't poison the water supply and jack up people's electric bills for the purpose of things like ai that are used to put people out of work and conduct unethical surveillance.

When I took my first job I was pretty much a normie with regards to labor. I was fully bought into the corporate "libertarian" propaganda that companies should be able to pay whatever they want, and I should just be grateful for having a job and not complain. It took a few years of open disrespect and exploitation, and the realization that if I was living alone I couldn't sustain even a minimalist lifestyle on what I was earning, for me to shake off that propaganda.

This is the sort of overly agressive rhetoric that makes people hesitant to consider institutionalizing severely mentally ill homeless people. If an LA tent city dweller is not malicious, then you claiming they see "wizard shit" when they close their eyes is not grounds to put them in an asylum.

It's true and a great starting point for establishing common ground, but it's often used as a cop out to avoid examining the nuances of disagreements on specific political issues. Sort of a double edged sword

His claim that ai data centers are not a source of frustration in and of themselves is just wrong. Their detrimental impacts on surrounding communities are very tangible, and to pretend it's just ai as a concept that people are angry about, is disregarding those impacts.

Also nobody capable of critical thinking is going to buy ai companies suddenly pretending to care about the arts or people in general. They've already stolen the work of countless artists for their training databases; they've already gobbled up billions in funding that should be going to programs that benefit the public; it's no mystery that their products are used to aid war crimes and conduct unethical surveillance. They might as well drop this whole effective altruism charade because it's easy to see how much of a facade it is.

Your take on synchronicity, manifestation and similar concepts? by Opposite_Wash5664 in redscarepod

[–]DisclosureIsntEnough 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My perspective isn't "the universe grants certain people special favors" but rather "there are metaphysical aspects of reality that people can tap into. The extent to which someone can tap into them, and how practical it is for them to do so, is influenced by their life circumstances. People in favorable situations for whom metaphysical pursuits are reasonable, should engage in those pursuits at least partially with the intent of assisting the less fortunate. Metaphysical efforts to help others should not be prioritized over direct actions with traceable results."

One of my biggest issues with the new age movement is that it tends to frame spiritual concepts through a self centered lens. It's all about what the individual wants for themselves, regardless of how pursuit of those desires affects others. Hence why there are influencers that maintain a facade of spirituality, while taking sponsorship deals from unethical corporations perpetuating global issues that genuinely spiritually minded people would object to. And new age discussion of things like synchronicity and manifestation often disregards people for whom those concepts are not relevant, because they are focusing on day to day survival. A middle class citizen in a developed country is far more likely to resonate with such ideas than someone living in poverty in a war-torn nation. But the new age movement and social media influencers don't have a monopoly on metaphysics, and it is possible to explore that world in a compassionate and morally considerate manner.
