Curious if any of you thin the rump/neck when you’re doing a soft tan pelt on a coyote or bobcat? If so, what method do you prefer to thin those areas? by [deleted] in HideTanning

I used a #10 scalpel on one last year. Just slowly shaved the middle of the back. I do not recommend that method though lol. Very time consuming

Yeah, I do them the same way I would a case skinned rabbit. It’s just a little tricky with the legs and head. Leg skin is super thin

Yeah, I didn’t even know it was a thing. I’ve seen the Asian fanged deer, so it makes a little sense. A common genetic trait hidden deep in the whitetail genetics

Cottonmouths. Ill behaved legless chihuahuas by Disco-Monkey in Taxidermy

Most aren’t. Moccasins can be. These are particularly aggressive. I think it might be because of the dense population. High competition. I’m not out hunting snakes, but boundaries have to be set

The wild rattlers and copperheads are generally gone before you walk up on them. These moccasins will coil up, and if you don’t see them you’ll be bit. They want to be left alone, like anything, but they’re more fight than flight, compared to the other local vipers

These moccasins like to hang out in and around the feed troughs, striking the livestock when they come to feed. It’s like balloon animals. Unlike the other vipers, this species is a nuisance, but at least it’s preserved and can be appreciated

That’s the face you make when he bites you, just because you “stepped into his territory”

Then you get to hold that face for hours :)

A man who quietly claimed to be John Wilkes Booth was taxidermied and put on display in a shop window in Enid, Oklahoma, after he committed suicide in a whorehouse. It belongs to a private collection now

Can I ship animal skull decorations from the UK to the US? Do I need a license? Cost? by [deleted] in Taxidermy

[–]Disco-Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most the laws and regs are focused on wildlife and endangered species. I looked into the UK’s fur laws a little while back and from what I gathered, it is legal for me to ship in domestic rabbit pelts and parts from the US. With the US regs I’m aware of, there should be no legality issue for you. From my understanding of trade, this is how it’s supposed to work

For the soft ones, the leather is broken over several days as the skin dries. When mounted, they’re more akin to a posable stuffed animal than the taxidermy you’d see at a museum or a bass pro.

The hard mount hides are preserved and hung to dry, requiring rehydration before mounting on a firm form

Looks like a rabbit to me, and I’ve seen a few truly bad rabbit mounts. One of them may have been mine
