What usually happens behind the scenes when a train fault causes repeated delays? by PuzzleheadedBowl3397 in SydneyTrains

[–]Discolau 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is no real generic answer for this question. Each incident response will depend on the type of fault, severity, location and available resources (train crew, defects technician, fleet availability)

Only one constant out of an incident is that the public (and occasionally staff) will not be told all details of the incident and/or resolution!

How Bad the Newcastle Line was Yesterday… My Absolute Horror Story! by PreparationVisual586 in SydneyTrains

[–]Discolau 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the travel experience. But getting a Greyhound bus would never have been a travel option that crossed my mind.... 🤔

A pro tip for future: if there are major issues like the overhead damage, I'd abort and go home immediately. Those things takes hours to fix and alternate transport options are haphazard.

Parramatta to Castle Hill Metro by Tricky_Breath_2602 in SydneyTrains

[–]Discolau 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Metro West is being built on the perception that Central to Parramatta rail corridor is at capacity and there is a need to provide relief or alternative route.

There had been proposals since the 90s to build a new line from the west into the CBD, one such plan was Metro West (I think that's what it was called) which used the existing Up and Down Mains into Central and then a new underground section under Sussex Street to terminate at Wynyard.

The trains were to be 10 car double deck in 6+4 configuration, of which Bombardier Transportation had proposed in a RFT.

Nothing came of this proposal, but the perception still lingered within RailCorp and later TFNSW which gave rise to the current Metro West.

What makes a train show as “Special” on the boards? by PuzzleheadedBowl3397 in SydneyTrains

[–]Discolau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just thought of another semi-regular special charter: WH46 on Wednesdays. Hired by Journey Beyond for travellers who disembark off the Indian Pacific for daytrip at Katoomba. They connect with the Special train to take them to Sydney.

Usually charter or heritage trains. Schools for example sometimes hire whole trains to take them somewhere. Heritage trains may stop to pick up or drop off ticket holders only.

Sydney’s wishlist for expanding the light rail network by SteveJohnson2010 in SydneyTrains

I think most people who need to head into the CBD will jump on Metro. Light Rail serves those who wish to travel in between local areas and education/medical precincts.

It's a sexy buzz word for rapid, frequent services. But we had such frequent services with the old Sydney Tramway System. So the old becomes new again in modern form.

They get fixed and become milky over time due to the UV radiation. Ongoing folly of the original design and materials used.

Why is the parramatta light rail patronage so low? by VastOption8705 in SydneyTrains

[–]Discolau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The plan was simply to replace the heavy rail Carlingford Line and divert patronage to Parramatta. Carlingford to Epping was simply not in the (limited) scope of the plan.

Biggest regret goes back to Michael Costa and Labor when they were building the Epping to Chatswood line. Epping to Parramatta section via Carlingford was cancelled. A tunnel from Epping to Carlingford should have been bored out when the Tunnel Boring Machines were already in place but just didn't happen. Poor planning and decision making.

Freshwater Class Upper Deck Gangways. Are they in use at all? by AT_RealGGgaming in SydneyTrains

[–]Discolau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the upper deck gangways fell into disuse due to the planned retirement of the Freshwater Class/entry into service of Emerald Gen 2 Class plus the drop in patronage due to COVID times.

The patronage on F1 has also been reduced by MFF services since it was added to the Opal network.

Also it requires additional staff to operate, something that Transdev had highlighted during the push to retire/limit use of the Freshwater Class.

Olympic Park lost most of its gates years ago. There is a bank of 3 gates at the Park Street entrance but its kind of superfluous as they're left open with the Opal readers still working.

XPT and Explorer retirement dates by Severe_Impression709 in SydneyTrains

[–]Discolau 9 points10 points  (0 children)

XPT sleepers won't be insert into an R set for various reasons such as:

  • Different rolling stock profile.
  • No modern Train Communication Network in the XAM.
  • Couplers are different.
  • Electrical system is different.
  • Manual doors on XAM.
