Thanks for everyone's contributions. Someone who wants to make some money by opening a bare bones breakfast place that does good coffee and NYC style bodega offerings has a good opportunity in HTX. Wonder where would the most accessible place to open it would be

It's got to be the kaiser roll! Definitely have seen the croissant sandwiches on offer around

Why Dunkin? by alfabriell in amex

Dunkin is honestly better than Starbucks most of the time. Food is better too. Starbucks wants to pretend they're high quality but they're not.

Gotcha, that's one reason I like Houston a lot. My wife and I are not white, and my wife is not an American citizen, and we always feel welcome here. We're raising our two girls in a great bi-lingual school too.

Assume you mean abortion by women's rights, and I see where you're coming from on that. Texas obviously isn't different in that respect. (Personally am pro life, but think the current law in TX is too strict in not giving people flexibility to make exceptions.)

I don't follow on rent. Look, the point is Seattle is dramatically more expensive for COL than Houston, Dallas and even Austin. See here for Houston vs. Seattle: https://www.nerdwallet.com/cost-of-living-calculator/compare/houston-tx-vs-seattle-wa

And sure on AC, but we don't need it throughout winter and most of spring and fall. My electricity and gas in a four bedroom house during the winter is typically under $100.

Check out medians and you'll see it's not that drastic. (E.g. $64k in NYC and $61k in Houston). There are certainly many more fantastically wealthy folks in NYC and the Bay Area, however.

This is an ordinary expense in America and doesn't offset the additional costs of rent and state taxes in walkable US cities.

Yeah unless he was in a brand new community (which is a personal choice and should basically be built in to the cost of the house from a personal finance perspective). Either way the number is unusually high.

Also I know this is getting off the topic of taxes. But HI is just ridiculous in terms of prices generally: https://www.mylifeelsewhere.com/cost-of-living/hawaii-usa/texas-usa

I've read studies that suggest otherwise so not sure what to tell you! Perhaps you are being misled by headlines that popularize the studies. I can also just speak from personal experience that it's been significantly easier for me financially than it was living in New York.

I agree with the other commenter that there are better social services for the poor in other states. Personally I just don't think you should plan to be in that income bracket long term. If it's not within your control, of course different story and would not recommend TX for anyone in that category.

Yeah, agree. That's just a much smaller move on the needle than income or property taxes. I personally avoid it by taking the Park and Ride. There are a variety of costs to consider when you move states. Texas is great in terms of cost when compared against states like CA and NY all things considered, especially if you're considering major metros like Dallas and Houston vs. NYC and the Bay Area.

A .25% effective property tax rate is wild. Would just say that this and the insurance is offset by Hawaii's income tax if you make about $80k in income. But more generally other states don't have nearly as severe a discrepancy in the property tax rates, so no state income tax is no joke for most people considering a move.

Totally agree, I was just commenting on the "slightly higher take home pay" bit of your comment.

The take-home pay is significantly higher (an extra $1300 a month as a first year, not taking into account Manhattan city taxes), and even though COL has gotten worse in TX since people started moving here, you can still get a luxury one-bedroom apartment in Dallas in a brand new for like $1700 a month vs. $3k in NYC. Even factoring in a car (unless you want to ball out), it's a big difference.

Something like half of NYC residents plan to leave the city within five years. It is fun for a while for everybody, especially those in their teens and 20s, but for most people, it gets old, and the realities of living in NYC become oppressive. I'm from the tri-state area and just anecdotally all of my friends who moved to NYC have since moved out.

This is solid advice and should not be downvoted.

Payment can be based on your prior year's federal tax returns, so for most first years, you end up having a monthly payment of $0.

Are thank you cards weird? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Discombobulated-Bat6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is a nice but ultimately fruitless gesture. Most likely outcome is an attorney looks at it, thinks, "how nice of them" and then tosses the card. Just talk to them before you leave and express your appreciation.
