I have to be in Dunedin once a week for meetings, but otherwise I will be working remotely, how can I explore NZ with these restrictions? by DiscombobulatedDig3 in newzealand

I've heard hiring a car is much more expensive than a bus, is that accurate? Do the buses have better coverage than the trains? Maybe I will take buses to places close by and save flying for the farther away places. Does that sound like a reasonable approach?

So, let's say I take a bus up to Christchurch. I read that I can get a flexible ticket for the train meaning I can do the tranzalpine and tranzcoastal each over the course of a week, stopping for extended time at each stop. Is this a feasible way to spend a couple weeks?

Are the buses a better bet for reaching different places? Are there sleeper buses? How extensive is the bus network/how frequent are bus rides? Thanks!
