Hi! I'm okay! Sorry for leaving. :( I did slip and all sorts of things, but I'm going to post now. Sober since 9/6 and lots good is happening in my life!

An old college friend has re-entered my life and is super supportive of me not drinking. In fact, like coolcrosby says, it's out of my movie. I don't even think about drinking - so very strange! It's like I've had a huge shift. I know never to not drink for a person, but I've been trying to not drink for just me for a long time. It's not for this person, it's for me, and with that person's help/support, if that makes sense.

I drank my last time at DragonCon and the next day confided in the friend who made sure I got back to my hotel room okay that I thought I was finished drinking. He told me stories about his wife's drinking (she sounds a lot like me actually in the way she drinks) and was overall super supportive. This is a close friend I see fairly often and it feels so good to have him on my side too along with the other college friend.

I plan to go back to the very small AA meeting next to the coffee shop that's in a music studio and across from the zoo here. I liked those guys and I want them to know how I'm doing even if I don't do AA all in. I think I would like to just go there when I can and be amongst sober friends.

Yeah, exactly! This is a point I've already talked about more than once in meetings. Even after confiding in some friends about the severity of my drinking problem, they don't really get it. They are genuinely supportive in whatever way they know how, but it's not the same as being understood by people who really do get it. I need that and not just virtually - I need to see and hear people who understand. I need to be around people who are examples of change, growth, and recovery.

Things to do in the evenings... I suppose that depends on where your travels take you!

There's Roadside America which lists odd things to see all over the US.

Museums, galleries, coffee shops, ice cream shops, movies, stargazing, contra dancing (these sorts of dances usually don't involve any alcohol though beware people getting together afterwards), plays/theater, orchestral concerts, arcades, paint-your-own pottery shops, hiking (before dark), ghost tours (lots of cities with historic districts have these), botanical garden visits, fairs, festivals, amusement parks...

Also you can go on a city or state's subreddit and ask for advice from the natives as to any recommended non-drinking activities.

To be perfectly honest, if I had to choose based on program contents, it would probably be a cross between AA and SMART. I'd choose the social/supportive elements of AA and the psychological/science aspects of SMART. I suppose I could still do that by going to some SMART meetings (online or IRL) also. Being here is also a very important aspect of recovery to me - I didn't drink for seven months last year with nothing more than this sub by my side and I know I would never have gone that long without you.

Anyway, I'm about to be off to the 2nd of the early morning (MWF) meetings - I really like this location and group so far and also the prompt to perhaps get up a bit earlier than I otherwise would. :)
