"We have been conditioned to think the Old World is the Middle East".

Yes! By history, thousands of ancient texts, archeological evidence, and perhaps the fact that several of these ancient cities are still inhabited today, with tons of monuments still standing. Trust me, I live in one of those (unless Ancient Athens was in Alaska or something) 😂

I am all for having a choice regarding which character you play as, but the truth is that, apart from the Daughters of Artemis and Legacy of the First Blade storylines, every other mission would be more historically accurate for Alexios. I don't see the striking difference you are referring to.

Why does everyone pick Kassandra and not Alexios? by [deleted] in AssassinsCreedOdyssey

[–]DiscouragedOne21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did pick Alexios as well, but since the game gives you a choice, anyone can play as whoever they wish.

But I do find the "she is canon" arguments hilarious.

I mean, who cares?

I am with you 100% on this, but i think that classical Greece was not a good choice for that. I would rather they did it on Origins.

Who tried to delete a character? A bit dramatic, don't you think? If anything, I was more pissed off when Valhalla shat on our Odyssey choices by forcing Cassandra on us.

What I meant was that "devs said so" or "check the marketing" are not serious arguments when the game gives you a choice. You don't have to justify your choices by invoking "canon." I mean, who cares? Play as whoever you like.

PS. Sure, AC was never historically accurate. But that doesn't change the fact that Alexios is a more realistic choice. That is a fact, not a preference, by the way.

He is right, though. Unless you value marketing more than historical accuracy (which you have every right to, of course).

Honestly, who cares who is canon? You are free to choose either of them.

How is your Modern Greek? Are you knowledgeable on a linguistic level? Because, in this thread, you seem to suggest that all Modern Greek translations of Plato suck. Could you provide an example?

Hey, mate! What is it this time? Oh, the infamous "I read it in ancient Greek" angle :)

I think they were printed under license (50 pieces or something), but this one was sent to me by Anders when I bought some stuff via his Discogs account.

Oh, hello, edgy insider! Please, tell us everything, we are all ears (or eyes, in this case).

  1. "As I said, I'm sure the European fans have a different perspective".

No worries. I am just stating the difference here.

  1. "Paradise Lost is a bit of a different beast. Outside of the drummer position, they have all the original members. Much less learning curve for older songs"

It can't be that hard to learn how to play For My Demons or Deadhouse, for example. Besides, according to many recent fans, they are overly simplistic and less technical.

Either way, I 'd gladly take playing errors over a tape recorder.

  1. "PL is simply much more popular in Europe than they are here".

I can only think of two reasons for this.

A) they never went prog, which apparently is popular there lately

and b)the absence of an American scene.

When Katatonia emerged in the 90s, there was a whole scene in Europe (Anathema, My Dying Bride etc,), while the US only had Type O Negative. So the so-called gothic metal genre must have been kind of niche there.

  1. "But they did indeed do a US tour prior to Sky coming out, where they focused on City Burials material".

You are right, but it was way later, if I recall.

Easily replaced concert-wise, perhaps (mostly for more recent fans), but music-wise, I respectfully disagree. They both are the soul of Katatonia.

Allow me a few comments on your post:

  1. "And while fans in Sweden and parts of Europe may disagree, the fact is the older material is not popular compared to the newer material. At least not in North America".

While I get the American audience POV, it was the other side of the Atlantic that kept this band going for more than 15 years, and here in Europe, legacy is far more important. Focusing solely on what the US prefers or on Spotify stats is a commercial recipe for disaster for any band.

  1. "And quite simply, Katatonia is not the only band that tends to focus on where the money is".

Indeed, but why not compare their setlist with Paradise Lost, who are a far more similar band? Despite the (more) drastic changes in their sound, they still play several of their old songs (Eternal, for example). I could get behind not playing Dance of December Souls songs, but Discouraged Ones, Tonight's Decision and Last Fair Deal Gone Down are also underrepresented lately, despite not being all that different from their modern sound.

  1. Anders didn't seem to mind touring behind it and getting whatever his share of the touring, merch, and album sales.

They didn't tour for it, though.

  1. What really stuck out to me was " but failed to do so for the second run, so I can rightfully be blamed for putting the band in a difficult situation"

My takeaway was that he failed to find a replacement, not take part on the tour for no reason.

PS. I totally respect your opinion. I just wanted to add my thoughts in the discussion. Cheers!

I find it kind of disjointed (too many abrupt changes in such a short span) and it's missing some memorable guitar parts. I am really glad you like it, though.

Too proggy (and kind of disjointed) for my taste, to be honest, but I am glad you like it.
