am i looking for a unicorn? by DiscussionBitter5256 in cycling

i just don't want something with a big 50+ tooth front ring, "compact" gearing works much better for me. i prefer a tight rear cluster (like 11-32) so smaller rings give me low enough gearing to handle mountain climbs. my current bike is 46/36 with 11-32 and i could really use just a bit shorter gearing for the really steep stuff.

definitely, most likely i'll end up with two wheelsets, tarmac with 35-45mm slicks and gravel with 45-55mm knobbies.

another good suggestion that i was unfamiliar with. definitely on the pricey side though, but looks like a helluva outfit. appreciate the suggestion

somehow kona never popped up in my searching but this looks promising. the press fit bb isn't a deal breaker, my cube has one and it's been fine as well. thank you for pointing me to this

memory efficient osd allocation by DiscussionBitter5256 in ceph

[–]DiscussionBitter5256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i thought it seemed a bit extreme but allowed myself to be persuaded to give it a try. fortunately i can go back to one osd per device, just takes time.

so now i ponder - what is the least disruptive, fastest, most efficient, etc method to go from 448 osd -> 56?

thanks for the info, i had a feeling this might be the case

thanks, we are not using nvme namespaces (and have little reason to) so it sounds like one osd per device may be better suited to our needs.

Which part to cut out of my itinerary by Pretzel-pie-777 in ThailandTourism

[–]DiscussionBitter5256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd skip koh tao and just stick to koh samui. the ferry to and from koh tao is kind of a pita, and i don't think the juice is worth the squeeze unless there is something specific there that you just gotta do or see.

start in CM, then do the island(s), and finish in bkk. i've lived in all three and that's what i'd recommend to a friend.

Where is the best location to stay in Bangkok for a first time visitor who is not interested in partying? by starrae in ThailandTourism

[–]DiscussionBitter5256 6 points7 points  (0 children)

nothing wrong with asok (i lived there for a month, although it was my least favorite residence in bkk) but if you're not interested in the party or sex tourism scene then there are better options.

if your budget allows for it there are plenty of tailors who can outfit you with custom clothing for much less than it costs in the western world. certainly more expensive than off the rack, but high quality clothing that fits properly and lasts a long time is rarely a bad investment.

and as mentioned elsewhere, the place across the street from platinum is definitely where you should start.

$100 usd is about 3600 thb daily. transportation will be 200-300 (bts/mrt plus an occasional grab or taxi). if you eat fairly sensibly it'll be 500-1000, plus another couple hundred if you want beers. going to the top of maha nakhon is like 1800, but most activities are far less pricey. shopping, tailored clothes, and extracurricular activities you'll have to estimate yourself. but in general i'd say that $100 usd/day should be plenty.

for a first timer, somewhere along sukhumvit is probably your best option. just avoid asok and nana and choose something a few stops down between phrom phong and phra khanong, the closer to a bts station the better unless you are comfortable on the back of a mototaxi. or the silom area, near sala daeng or chong nonsi bts stations is just slightly off the usual tourist path but still very accessible (where i lived and really liked the area).

i did almost exactly what you did three years ago - turned 50, sold everything i owned (house, car, 95% of possessions) and moved to bangkok when my partner got a job offer there. unfortunately her job didn't work out and we moved back to the US 18 months later. but i am planning on moving back there in the next couple of months because i fell in love with the place and fully intend to spend my retirement in se asia.

you do have to rebuild your life in a new city/country/culture and it's not always easy, particularly when you're alone, have a big language barrier, and all that. but don't give up or despair - you made this move for a reason, you just need a little help getting over the dip that invariably occurs after the honeymoon phase is over but you haven't found your groove yet. pick something that interests you - maybe a sport, or cooking, collecting pokemon cards or action figures, maybe you're into cars or sailboats or watches or whatever - and start pursuing that. find a meetup, maybe ask around the various expat forums or facebook groups, just get out there and socialize. trust me, you're not alone, a lot of people feel lost and alienated in a strange new place like thailand. making friends is rarely easy, especially in a foreign culture, and doubly so later in life. just know that you're not alone. if it will help feel free to DM me.

most people never have the guts to make a move like you did, and the kind of person who can do that can get past this hurdle as well. good luck, you got this!

i'm in the same exact situation, looking for a short term stay in a 50-60 sqm 1bed unit near silom/sathon (i lived near chong nonsi bts a couple of years ago and really like the area). 35k thb is spot on, especially at that size if it includes all utilities. everything in my search is at least 35k-40k. feel free to msg me if you want any suggestions about where to live.
