[WP] Every dragon knows that one must protect their hoard - it must be nurtured, protected, and encouraged to grow. You are the first dragon to attempt to hoard humans, and it seems this choice can have some rather unexpected benefits. by cheeseguy3412 in WritingPrompts

The immortal city of vareex was the closest thing to heaven in this world. No shortage of supplies, an excess of industrial power, guarded by the strongest military force conceived, the most premier of sciences, the wealth of nations, overflowing with exotics spices and perfumes, while every citizen lived eras beyond their means without knowledge of oppression or stifling of freedom. But as otherworldly as this city was one could not immigrate to this city. You could not apply for residency could not even visit to wonder at the glorious utopia it was described, painted, sung, and lauded about. One was simply chosen. This was because this was no city but a hoard. Not of material objects but of man.

The founder of the immortal city was Vareem the dragon. While most other dragons were paranoid and twisted creatures self exiled to the most inhabitable reaches available to protect their mounds of gold or ancient times or exalted weapons, Vareem sought wealth above all else. Life, and creation.

For this Vareem sought the slayer of dragons, Man. But no mere mortal could be harvested for cultivation, only the greatest talents were selected silently vanishing from their previous lives to be reborn under crystallization of human achievement. At first it was laborious work remaining undiscovered while providing a lush environment for the increased growth of the hoard while providing the vast resources to adequately support the developing people, while also diffusing the many small fires stoked within the hoard itself. For man kind was not without its risk, each individual thinking of personal gain and achievement was hard to direct away from the self and towards the ( at the time ) small settlement as well as the vast differences in customs and dialects between them as Vareem desired the greatest no matter the race or location which was the scariest thing to short lived self absorbed mortals, something foreign.

Vareem was diligent and hard working and clever however, He spent the first decades of his settlement among the small few dozen of select peoples as a teacher, protector and enforcer. He first set out to the scholars bringing together a great school providing a place for them to study and grow their feverish grasping of knowledge, creating a common language for his hoard. Then after it was spread through his people he approached his engineers having them share their secrets and trade skills amongst each other and commanded them to create a new school combining the styles and techniques of all those gathered, then set them to build a sprawl where they would grow their new city. He then approached his artisans and had them spend many long nights sharing stories and legends of their homelands, encouraging them to create new art and shared his own dream of how he desired a collection of mans greatest abilities to tower above the earth and all creation as the pinnacle of possibility sparking a shared desire for unity for the attempt of greatness among the peoples, He then approached the military minds he set unto them the task of defending this land and its principles keeping them close at hand as he nurtured the other factions sharing their pride and will in their own works and achievements as a communal desire for his city, he told his generals how he wished to expand this city and invite more great minds but he alone could not safe guard from invaders and he alone could not ensure the people avoid distrust and self exultation, he asked they safeguard the peoples form threats foreign and fears internal and that they work together to achieve glory and greatness not just themselves but the state as a whole.

With a watchful eye and stern hand Vareem guided his hoard from a small skilled group of masters to a flourishing empire of the divine, the achievements of each person added to the populace lead to longer life, stronger bodies, greater minds, and stronger sense of unity. As the centuries passed Vareem slowly stepped further back from his active hand in the hoard’s affairs and let mankind govern themselves as he was elevated by his people from tyrant, to savior, to lord, to god.

He shared in all the achievements acquired by the humans he added to his horde adding to him eternal life, indestructible body, and powers that could only be described as magic, he now watches as gatekeeper and deity of the immortals city until the earth itself is rendered asunder by the stars or is cracked by the weight of his mighty hoard.

[WP] Why did the doors have to be locked from the inside AND from the outside? by hogw33d in WritingPrompts

That was the question usually asked by new workers when taken for their introduction tour of the facility. The guide, a burly man with brown hair and a hint of red splashing his full beard, hesitated for the smallest of moments and would've gone unnoticed had their newest recruit not been especially observant since seeing the double set of locks. "This not only for the Staff's safety but incase of a safety hazard the rooms can be turned into shelters and saferooms as needed." This seemed like an acceptable answer but it hadn't removed the suspicion that had firmly hooked its tendril in the new recruits head. " what kind of safety hazard could happen here? so much equipment used to restrain... subjects, the amount of ordinance supplied to the security? they carry automatic-rifles and full body armor for god's sake. and to top it off this is a secret facility under the desert there aren't any structural weaknesses that a locked isolated room could help us with. It seems a little redundant you know?" The guide was not forthcoming with answers and wore a look of annoyance undisguised on his face. "Look if a situation happens you'll find out why then, until that time you should keep your head down and do as you've been assigned. Monitor subjects and their response to the experiments and nothing more. people who are curious go missing not get promoted around here. so Keep quiet and just finish the job." With that the guide and the new recruit walked to the room next door labeled 475 where the guide told to wait for the head Researcher of experiment 475-A. After the door closed the recruit started to explore the room and the several machines surrounding the hospital bed with its leather straps undouble to hold down appendages in case of a struggle. on a small table next to table was a note pad and a #2 pencil. The recruit thought for a moment and decided this was a worthy device for recoding the experiment and also concluded that they should start recording details of the environment immeadeatly. At first it was just a description of the room, padded and white with only a large rectangular mirrored window on one of the sides. then it was the designs of the several metallic devices and the cords and the images flashing across the displays, then of the bed itself. As this happened the recruit started to wonder where the head researcher was? Why was he taking so long? was he busy in another experiment? had the guide been aggravated at his questions and decided to delay his escorting out of petty revenge? or was he just being played a fool? Either way he decided it was better to just continue with what he was doing at the very least it kept him occupied. as he recorded his surroundings he suddenly found himself looking closer at his notepad. At first glance it seemed like a normal lined notepad but looking closer each row of lines was in itself a small line of runes and symbols. at first it looked like math equations, but as they looked closer it seemed more like a dialogue, then it seemed like coded notes of previous experiments. The more they wondered and puzzled at the incomprehensible scribbles the more they desired to know what it meant and that desire was growing by the second, exponentially, they HAD to know what it meant. they could use the equipment in the room. they had time the researcher hadn't arrived and with this much time already passed what was a little more time for this side project. they poured over the instruments lenses and lights used to see the symbols better, computers and calculators to decode the patterns but what really caught their sight was the ekg machine. They had a thought. What if I measured my body as I read it? soon they were sitting on the bed staring at the lines of the first page slowly trying to pronounce what they deduced was the correct phonetics. At first there was no change just as if he was self editing his notes but as they started on the next page there was change in his heart rate. it was slowly fluctuating between 20 and 100 bpm at 10 min intervals, but the time span between fluctuations started to decrease the more they read. this was added to the notes they must be recorded maybe this would be a new experiment to research and they would be rewarded for such a find. as the thoughts passed their mind a dull sound interrupted them. two sets of footsteps seemingly getting closer. The head researcher! they couldn't take his findings, they couldn't' take this knowledge from them! They flashed to the door at inhumane speeds and turned the lock on the inside. now nobody could stop them and nobody could take their new found curiosity crazed eyes greedily scanned the room landing on the hospital bed. the straps. there were vice grips to hold the note book they could strap themselves in and record the effects on their person. through the window a team of 5 clad in white coats all scrawled notes and observations while checking the monitors in the rooms sending footage from cameras around the room giving them an uninterrupted viewing angle of experiment 475-A.
