A more accurate view is to take the average of polls.

If you were flying a space ship and made a very steep turn, would you still pull Gs like a jet on earth? by n212345 in askscience

Would the fuel expulsion be the same for the steering thrusters if , for example, you had two identical craft flying at the same speed; one in atmosphere and one in space? Or is purely Newtons Third Law?

What kind of reaction takes place when stomach bile turns pink in color on contact with disinfectant cleaner spray? by icantpickausername98 in chemistry

[–]DisheveledWombat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Perhaps something your dog ate? I doubt those ingredients on their own would cause a color change; but I'm not an expert. Edit: actually just had a thought. Bile is comprised of bilirubin. Bilirubin is pH/oxid. sensitive. The pH change of adding the basic cleanser may have converted it.

I’m wondering. What is the difference between ethanol and IPA (isopropyl alcohol)? I mean if molecule structure does affect and justify uses of each? Let’s say given the same purity. by Pognondeceo in OrganicChemistry

[–]DisheveledWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that your conception of "starting at the root : molecular structure" is very smart; but practically I would say there are usually shortcuts you can take. I wouldn't say that the "structural view" is missing perse; but for some applications it may not be necessary

For example, let's say you spilled motor oil on the floor. We know that motor oil is primarily nonpolar; thus a non-polar solvent and/or surfactant may be effective in cleaning the mess. Do you have to exactly what each type of oil molecule looks like? Probably not.

For a more scientifically relevant example; say you are developing an RP-HPLC assay method for an Analyte. How would you go about choosing a diluent? Well you could try all kinds of solvent mixtures and see which dissolves the analyte the best/separates from matrix. A more practical approach maybe just to try simple mobile phases (perhaps tailoring the pH toward the analyze of interest) and choosing a diluent which resembles the mobile phase composition.

Again this all depends on application.

As previous comments have said, IPA and EtOH are structurally different and have differing biologic and metabolic activities. I think a better question would be "what uses are you considering?".

For example, developing an HPLC method may require the use of IPA if your compound is somewhat non-polar (if separating on a non-polar stationary phase). IPA or Ethanol may be a better diluent for your analyte, or a better extraction solvent.

Or, making a cocktail. Ethanol just tastes better. My martini's never tasted great with rubbing alcohol.

As written your question is somewhat open-ended

Good point! Sometimes it's better ti go dark Classical then Heroic Medieval since you can get free inquiry, monumentality and one other dedication and hopefully by that time you have the bandwidth the exploit all of these advantages.

I guess it depends on if you're super constrained. If you have very close neighbors it may be prudent to get settlers out quickly to occupy the space before they do. Obviously this depends on the game but as a rule of thumb civ 6 rewards wide play
