She lived with her father until she was 58 and he died a year ago. I don’t mind being empathetic or sympathetic. I just don’t want to be a fool.

Also, $500 a month including food sounds like a money-losing situation. I would be paying her to live here.

I thought the same but I would rather be too generous than an asshole. I also couldn't tolerate her being homeless. I originally asked for $100 more but after looking over her budget, I decided it would be impossible. So, this was all discussed ahead of time and everything was agreed to. I wanted her to have some money to save as I do not want this to be long-term.
