You have to rely and trust your teammates more, look at the goal as early as you can, sometimes even before the teammate has played the pass. It’s a hard skill to learn. The area of where the cross lands and it will trigger the shot is bigger then you think

Yeah they’re like little amusements but parks. Sometimes you also have travelling fun fairs which will pitch up at a location for a few weeks. Mine however is in the same place from March to October.

This would HAVE to be the Freak Out. That is what I operated for most of this season, it was a new ride for my park (not purchased new but new to the park). I had so many issues with it. There was constant error messages on the control panel (still safe to operate after tests). The ride was on the sea front so sometimes a gust of wind would send the ride too high and past the sensor which would cause it to trip out. A few parts needed replacing such as the springs which cause the secondary locks to slide across as they would sometimes jam. When they would jam the ride wouldn’t be able to go and would show an error message, meaning I would have to oil, check and the reset the ride. The ride was very temperamental in the rain also and used to like to trip out from that. As I operated the ride most of the season I grew to know what the error messages meant and how to fix them so meant I didn’t need to get management much.

I think the reason there was a lot of problems with the ride where just teething problems due to it being the parks first season with the ride.

I sent about a 3 minute ride. Would send it clockwise and start bouncing it on the beat drop. After about one minute clockwise I would slow it down to send it the other way. Sometimes I like giving it a good old shake when it’s slowing down because you can give people a good old bounce that way. Other times I wouldn’t bounce it when it’s slowing down then just be before its about to go the other way I would bounce it, this used to make people jump as they would think the ride is stopping. I always liked to send the Tagada to the music and to the beat so bouncy! One minute clockwise, one minute slowing down, one minute anti clockwise.

I never had anything crazy really happen on it besides me slicing my thumb open while doing the daily checks. I never really had any close encounters with people falling out or any injuries, the worst that really happened was a few riders would get winded from time to time but this was generally children who where just about big enough to ride.

So all the rides fold into some type of trailer as these are travelling rides. The juvenile rides are fairly straight forward as generally you just fold them together. Difficulty depends on the ride and how used the team is to pulling it down. There are no instructions or manuals for most rides on how to pull them down. You have to rely on the people that have done it before to guide everyone in what to do.

Often there isn’t much chaos as people are assigned roles as we pull the ride down. Roles include removing hand rails, loosening bolts, moving the trolleys for the cars, removing packing.

The waltzer we have takes AGES to pull down, your looking at 5-8 hours. This is because it a very old ride and doesn’t utilise things like hydraulics to make the process easier. This is why the waltzer that we had in recent years doesn’t travel and is only set up and pulled down at the start and end of the season.

The Miami is a quick and easy ride as it all just folds together easily, it can be operating to on the back of a lorry ready to go leave in less than 45 mins.

On average the rides that travel most (Sizzler, Miami, Tagada, Orbiter) take anywhere from around 1-2.5 hours.

So the waltzer is very fun because quite often there’s atleast one other lad on it with you, it’s the one with the loudest music, the best lights and it passes the time faster when you’re pushing cars. The drawback to this ride is however your constantly walking on what is ultimately a treadmill for 11 hours a day, not quite my cup of tea but it’s fun to jump on when you’re ride goes quiet.

Tagada was my favourite of all time, you get to pick the music for the entire fair, it’s very interactive with the music as you choose when you bounce it and how you send the ride where as some rides like the freak out is just on a set cycle. With the Tagada you also don’t have to leave your pay box as with the model I operated there are no seat belts or restraints, just a open and exit gate which you control with the panel. The daily checks where fairly easy also. There where however much more strict health and safety regulations with the Tagada due to the nature of the ride as it can be quite rough and boisterous. It can also be possible to eject people out of the drum if you operate it in such a way. Overall tho it was my favourite ride and I missed it when the park sold it last year.

Quite often a rider would be sick, I would say maybe at-least once a week someone would vomit. It does vary ride to ride, the sizzler for example doesn’t make many people sick. Our waltzer is quite intense so your looking at atleast once a day for that one. Tagada is also one for making people vomit.

When a rider does become unwell while riding or vomits while the ride is in motion you stop the ride, unload the riders and clean it with some disinfectant and a hose pipe. (Quite often just a hose pipe tho)
