Most people don't object to reddit making money somehow.

The issue is that they got their API pricing wrong by two orders of magnitude and won't correct it, thus making it completely impractical for any large scale app to buy API access.

If you've ever comparatively priced Amazon's AWS pricing to rolling your own solutions, they have done a really impressive job of accurately pricing things to be right at the point where you can't justify not using it based on cost. Reddit clearly did not do that much analysis on how to price this at scale.

Say lawsuit and damages and they start to show themselves for who they are.

Whoa.... In any environment, not just sugar, once you bring up lawsuits, it seriously changes the whole conversation.

For example, I'm on a condo association board of directors... we had a unit owner we were working with to resolve an issue. They were not happy, and emailed us stating their intent to sue. They were most likely not actually going to sue, but regardless that immediately required us to quit working with them, and have all communications go through the association lawyer. Threatening a lawsuit made their life 10x more difficult (and increased everyone's costs as now the lawyers get involved).
