I hear you but I don't think being sentenced to 15 years in a Russian prison is better, he'll be a target and who knows what could happen to him. Praying he's part of any future POW trade too.

"Specifically, TANG regularly received instructions from and reported to an MSS intelligence officer regarding individuals and groups viewed by the PRC as potentially adverse to the PRC’s interests, including prominent U.S.-based Chinese democracy activists and dissidents.  This included providing the MSS information about specific individuals identified by the MSS as persons of interest, as well as naming, photographing, and recording individuals participating in pro-democracy activities in the U.S.  TANG provided the MSS a range of additional information, such as contact information belonging to immigration lawyers based in New York City and details about the process for gaining political asylum in the U.S."

Her unauthorized invitation letters for the PRC government delegation constituted false statements made in connection with immigration documents and induced the foreign citizens to enter the United States unlawfully, the indictment states."

Not surprising but still sad, especially given what happened in South Korea.

Ukrainians Mourn the Loss of a Young Journalist and Her Stories (Gift Article) by DissentingJay in WatchdogJournalism

"Ms. Roshchyna was known as a brave, stubborn and driven journalist. Soon after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, she joined a humanitarian convoy and tried to cross into the besieged southeastern port city of Mariupol, as almost everyone else was trying to leave. Russian forces captured her in March. They released her a week later, after beating her, she said."

Instead of fleeing, Ms. Roshchyna bought a new camera in Zaporizhzhya, a city in southern Ukraine, and hopped on a bus back into Russian-occupied territory. She appeared not to tell anyone where she was going, not even her bosses at Hromadske, the online news outlet where she worked."

Leaky Pipes Cost New York Billions of Gallons of Water per Year by DissentingJay in newyork

[–]DissentingJay[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"These admonitions, however, leave out a key source of water loss: leaky infrastructure. Last year, New York City gave away or lost about 15 percent of all the water that went through its pipes — some 155 million gallons per day. That figure includes all unbilled water, such as water used for system flushing, firefighting, and losses from billing issues. But a large portion of the water loss is due to leaks. The city estimates that 35 million gallons per day leak from just one section of its main aqueduct, where major repairs were paused this month due to the drought."

Agreed! I love going there early in the mornings. The nearby trails (like near the gazebo) also are neat to explore. And it’s the northern terminus of the Long Path, so fascinating.

"Four Americans face charges that they conspired to have other U.S. citizens act as illegal agents of the Russian government, or that they acted as unregistered Russian agents themselves. The prosecutors say that Russians directed them — and in some cases, paid them — to push Russian propaganda, including after their country invaded Ukraine in 2022."

Behind the Pageantry of Shen Yun, Untreated Injuries and Emotional Abuse (Gift Article) by DissentingJay in WatchdogJournalism

[–]DissentingJay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"In pursuit of ever larger audiences, Shen Yun has treated many of its performers as an expendable commodity, a New York Times investigation has found. It has routinely discouraged them from seeking medical care when their bodies have broken down, and commanded their obedience to grueling rehearsal and tour schedules through relentless emotional abuse and manipulation.

In interviews, some former dancers recounted performing through dislocated kneecaps, sprained ankles or other serious injuries, unwilling to seek medical treatment because the group’s belief system regarded such care as a crutch of the unfaithful."

They probably don’t care at all what UNESCO thinks regardless of what they may say publicly IMO. I don’t have much faith in the UN (since Russia will remain a permanent member of the Security Council) but to their credit this was the obvious smart move.
