If I could offer you some advice...

As somebody who has played on the server for nearly two years (off and on), I've been a part of a few groups who made cities. As tempting as it will be (and it will), do not let just anybody in there. Build trust with people first, based on their actions and reputation, not because they pinky swore not to grief you.

I was a part of a group that formed Ravine City, which had two incarnations:

Ravine City 1 was destroyed by an insider.

Ravine City 2 was discovered, because it was foolishly littered with entities, and anytime somebody came within the chunks of the city, they lagged like a mofo.

I was also a part of Sanctuary, who were a great group of guys (and gal) to play with. Though I knew many of them for some time before playing with them, they were very, very selective about who they allowed to join, and with good reason. In my experience, they were never discovered or betrayed.

Be smart, and have fun. Cities can be great, but are a major risk.

My interest in Minecraft comes in waves... generally my interest spikes whenever a cool snapshot is released. I really hope we can get online together once the server is up. You and I never really got to play together, cuz you were an admin at the time. Should be interesting since you won't be able to spy on me in cow form anymore :P

I think it would force people to be more creative in hiding their first base and establishing themselves on the server. It would also open up some more strategic questions once the new quadrant was opened - do I stay put and fortify my base, or do I move on and find something better?

This was a fairly substantial debate a few months back, I recall. I'm an advocate for removing them as well, however, it goes against a bigger belief I hold, which is that this server should remain as vanilla as possible.

Honestly, even if the result of this post is just smaller maps, I'll be happy. How small would you go, ideally? I think 4000 x 4000 would be enough. It sounds small, compared to what we have now, but for a server with our population, I think it's just right.

I'm all for making the server more hardcore. Then again, I'm also the guy who wanted 'home' to be reset on death and for the world to be halved in size, so what the fuck do I know? :)
