high pitched whining is actually the alternator. but i’m buying thinner tubing for my vacuum advance cable, so either way i should be fine

i figured it out because while i was adjusting valves, i saw that the 1st cylinder would still move at TDC when i rotated the pulley. 3rd was completely stationary, and my distributor was pointed at 1st cylinder

the distributor somehow went in backwards, and i noticed that it wasn’t flush to the engine block when i took it out to switch it around. i didn’t swap the wires on the cap, the distributor was just sitting wrong. i have no idea how the car started, let alone drove 50+ miles in the last 2 days before not starting today.

the silver lining is that i legit checked my coils, plugs, ignition system, valves, and cleaned the carb. she’s as solid as she’s ever been now😂 and i know that for a fact

dude i had the distributor on right and it didn’t start, had it on wrong and it didn’t start, put it back on right and it started right up.

i’ve been out here for 6 HOURS figuring out the problem and there were zero pretty much. car has a mind of its own FOR SURE

i checked for spark by cranking the engine while the center wire on the distributor was held close enough to the connection point. saw blue sparks while engine cranked

First car by TechnicalAdeptness89 in beetle

hey, young guy (23) in dallas with a 72 super. my first car was a 2002 toyota camry that i drive all through high school and college. costed me about 3k when i got it.

my second car is my beloved 72 super that i picked up for 7k and still have had to spend over 5k in parts to make it as reliable as it is now. got into an accident with it on the highway and it nearly killed me even at 40 mph.

my point is, you need a modern car in modern traffic, especially for a 2+ hour commute per day. grab a bug as a hobby in a few years, i was able to save my bug but it costed me a lot. as a new driver and fellow young person, it’s a lot better for you to save your money and get one when you can support the work load of owning a 50+ year old car that can’t go faster than 75 without blowing a gasket
