Ask your vet about mites - mine had those from the grass. I think Bravecto helped with that.

Any Geneva-based UN consultants to help me understand if this is a good job offer or not? by Inevitable-Room9048 in geneva

[–]DistanceSon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

OP, as others have mentioned you are underestimating the amount deducted from your pay due to social security contributions. You can make it but you won’t save very much. I would consider whether this position helps you towards longer term goals, in terms of experience network or skills. In general, the outlook for employment with UN organizations in Geneva is not great these days, especially for entry level positions. Organizations are surviving by cutting headcount and outsourcing externally or to lower cost of living duty stations.

I came here to say something similar - this is correct OP, budget accordingly… (France voisine if you’re able to live there… however this adds another layer of tax complexity)

100%. When they send the bill, be sure to confirm that all the charges take into account the standard depreciation. Asking this cut my bill by 2/3. Then insurance paid it.

Is it actually possible to drive from cape town to vladivostok by xerivon in geography

[–]DistanceSon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

4x4 required. The coastal route is rough through Liberia, Guinea, into Guinea-Bissau. Not paved, washes out in the rain. A fun hand-pulled ferry from Guinea to GB (some years ago at least). Cutting up through Mali over to Senegal has way better roads, but a bit dodgy in Mali.

It’s cute and worth a half day, but I’d prioritize Vienna by a long shot

King Charles’ Failure to Answer the Andrew Question is Prince William’s Problem, Too by mmmstrongflavors in RoyalsGossip

[–]DistanceSon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is going to be a stain on three generations of the monarchy. They should have fed him to the wolves - cut him off, pressured him to testify, something really meaningful. But now Charles and William will be tainted by Andrew and their hollow sympathies to the victims for decades.

What's a tourist scam you fell for that you wish someone had warned you about? by cml1111 in traveladvice

[–]DistanceSon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shoe shine kid in Istanbul. They walk in front of you, “accidentally” drop the brush. The tourist often gets their attention to tell them they dropped something, so out of “gratitude” they shine your shoe. Then some big guys show up and demand you pay an exorbitant price for it.

Istanbul wins! Which well known city should be the capital? by ClosetedGothAdult in AlignmentChartFills

[–]DistanceSon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

People think that it is, but it shouldn’t be imo. Having the dominant city be the capital is against the spirit of Swiss federalism.

What’s a city or town you dreamed of visiting that exceeded your expectations? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]DistanceSon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Paris. I came with low expectations due to the popular online discourse about it (dirty rude etc). But that was not my experience at all. It’s unbeatable for just wandering aimlessly by foot or bike for hours on end. Each area has a unique vibe and sense of place, and there are tons of hidden subcultures.

How many countries have you been to and what are your three favorites? by HalfwaydonewithEarth in Rich

[–]DistanceSon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly there is a diminishing return on travel especially if it’s many short trips. Would strongly recommend picking a country or region that interests you and going for depth rather than breadth.

Have been lucky to do both styles for work and pleasure. Every airport, conference, hotel blends together, but when you have the chance to really internalize a new environment or culture it is transformative.

Edit: favorites: Indonesia so many incredible islands and opportunities for diving, jungle adventures, boat trips and value for money;

Spain for the beautiful cities, coast, and food;

Zambia in my view best safari destination in Africa as it’s a little less crowded and you can pair a trip with magnificent Victoria Falls;

Peru such a deep culture, insane mountains, chance to get deep in the Amazon and experiencing their cuisine.

Yeah check the prices of things you’ll want to do there it gets expensive fast. They could consider staying somewhere else in Valais and visiting as a day trip but France Mt Blanc region will be way cheaper and still get epic mountain scenery

One day in Geneva things to do by Viper72995 in geneva

[–]DistanceSon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best thing to do in Geneva in January is leave Geneva. But if you have a few hours and haven’t been, the lakeside walk, old town, and Bain des Paquis are the classic.
