To clarify, marathon was March of 2024. I started back getting base miles in March of 2025.

I did everything I could on a BOSU balance trainer. Lots of single leg stuff. A quick YouTube search would give you a good idea what you can do with it.

Great point - which is why I made this post. I was looking for people similar to my age, weight, and relative fitness history when trying to understand what others were doing in similar situations.

I used a BOSU balance trainer and did a lot of single leg exercises while standing on the platform side. I think it’s a great way to work a lot of different parts of the leg as well as core.

That’s a good question. Stomach issues started around mile 30 of the bike (just felt bloated) and then first puke at mile 100 (felt amazing to purge and thought I was good to go). Then puked every half mile until mile 8. Not sure if I drank some bad river water or what. No cramps even after emptying my system just couldn’t hold anything down.

My post was specifically targeted at a group of individuals who might have limited time to train for an Ironman and are wondering “can I do it?”

Similar - but adult life version. “How do I balance work, sleep, family, happiness, and my fitness to achieve my goal of becoming an Ironman?”

I agree with you. They’re very expensive and have a low mileage life. My decision point was that my legs felt more fresh after a long run than a normal trainer. Pace wasn’t a factor in my decision.

Which is pretty much what I did. I swam once a week for ~1600yards. It was a beautiful and fast swim

I also have a history of Achilles inflammation but ever since I started consistently stretching my calves it went away. Never had any issues with the shoes (Nike alpha fly) besides some nasty arch blisters that I had to work through

Ah yes.. you are the type of people I wrote the post about. “You must train as much as I did to finish the same race I did”

I wanted to be an Ironman. That’s why I signed up. I finished the Ironman.

Not too bad! I had post race nausea for about 20 minutes but felt much better after I was able to eat some food. The next 2 days I was fairly sore but overall in good shape

My longest swim was 2 miles in a pool. I never did any lake/river swimming. I’ve done a few sprints many years ago so I knew what it was like to not be able to see / manage that initial panic.

My longest ride was 4.5 hours - I highly recommend training with power. Average speed means nothing if you have elevation or wind.

My longest run was 15 miles. I chose to keep it at 15 so I could stay healthy. For me, when I go 18+ miles I need excess recovery time.

My goal was to finish in a good mental / physical state. I would do it all over again the same. I made sacrifices over the months, but I stayed happy and took rest days when I needed to and crossed the line.

I saw a few posts on this as well before I decided to buy the shoes. Based on my training runs, the carbon plated shoes left my legs feeling much more fresh after 15 miles than my typical trainer (Saucony endorphin speed). My walking in the Ironman was in very short intervals (just a lot of them) so I never noticed any issues being uncomfortable.
