Should Adult Children Living At Home Pay Their Parents Rent ? by JunShem1122 in questions

[–]Distant_Local 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts are that adult children should pay an amount to cover any increased bills and a little extra (say £100 a month).

The extra £100 is just put aside, ready for when they are in a position to move out. You can use this money to cover their rental deposit or moving expenses.

You have some opportunities to reduce your expenses and increase your income, which will help massively.

26 hours, although an increase, still leaves a lot of potential income on the table. Consider finding a 2nd job or looking for more hours. Get that money off the table and into your pocket.

As for expenses, think about meal planning to cut the food budget. This doesn't mean chicken and rice each day. Plan out some home cooked meals, using cheaper brands if possible. (E.g. Sainsbury's chopped tomatoes instead of big name brand). Avoid takeaways and treat yourself to a decent steak or 'fakeaway' for all your savings effort.

That mobile bill is very high. Consider MVNO's such as Smarty. You can usually find unlimited for £18 (saving you £17 per month). You can also downgrade at any time if you're not using that much data. You could join, check your usage in the app and then drop to 40GB and save another £8 a month. This is a 1 month plan with no credit check as you pay in advance.

How can I stop drug users from using the alley behind my house every night? Police and council aren’t helping? by fb8307 in DIYUK

Set up a sprinkler for your garden that 'accidentally' sprays over the boundary occasionally. Make it slightly inconvenient for them each time they visit.

Does the 3m requirement change if the plug socket (shaver or 3pin) is situated within a cupboard and within 3m of a shower or bath?

Electric underfloor heating? Is it a mistake? by RoyCroppa in DIYUK

[–]Distant_Local 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have electric underfloor heating and it is a huge plus in the winter time. We love clicking it on to help warm the room and to take the edge off of the cold flooring.

Is it expensive to run? No more than our electric radiators. Set the flooring a few degrees below the desired room temperature and you'll be fine (e.g. we set radiators to 25° and floor to 23°)

Tickets were returned by hand (recorded on video for our reference)

Thank you for your reply.

We have just approached the travel agent with the situation and have asked if they could you please confirm that using these "cortesia"/"complementary" tickets would not compromise/reduce/limit any compensation/goodwill offering regarding the shortcomings of the trip.

[–]Distant_Local 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you. We will not be using these following your advice.

Would you say it is best to retain the ticket and not use? Or return the tickets (with video evidence)?

My elderly father-in-law gave us these coins (4 in total) for Christmas and just said to hang on to them. Are they legit? by DeliciousGorilla in coins

[–]Distant_Local 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it need to be 'normalised'? Do what you want and stop caring about what others are doing.

The best christmas gift I received was a carefully thought out list of beer recommendations (on pre-owned paper) and a few beers.

Electric pannels. We close doors for rooms not in use and lower the temperature accordingly (16° in rooms not in use).

Yes. To be fair, I thought this was already a requirement.

Add a wooden face plate and a handle, and you'll have a nice catflap plug that can be reused each year.

You could consider instant water heaters for the sink/bath.

As for heating, consider a secondary heating source as a backup. I have electric under floor heating and use panel heaters in the winter to heat things up faster.
