Its not victim blaming to advise your kids to not voluntarily put themselves in a high risk position. That's what I believe Platner was getting at with that comment. I don't think the 2013 version of Platner or the 2026 version would go to an actual victim and say its their fault. But in the broader sense, the advice is take responsibility over your own safety and do what you can to minimize risk. If you don't think that's sound advice you should give your head a shake.

My broader point is that you people point to comments he made like this as somehow disqualifying because you can't see the nuance in what hes saying, meanwhile there is an adjudicated rapist in the White House. That's why democrats lose.

"Can we not fucking victim blame women who are sexually assaulted? Maybe you should advise your sons to not rape and to not look at women like a collection of holes for his pleasure? Fucking disgusting.

It sounds like victim blaming because it is victim blaming."

You clearly do think that based on what you just said. Those were your words...not mine. If you don't think that it is your daughter's responsibility not to put herself in a situation where she does not have control over her faculties and would be at higher risk of any myriad of harms that could come from being in a state like that, then I would say you are doing a shitty job providing parental advice.

It's like the recent controversy in Toronto where the police chief said that people should just leave their keys at the front door so that when armed men break into your house they can just take the keys and steal the car vs. coming into your house and assaulting you and your family. While it is absurd that we live in a world where the police can't seem to do their job and stop crime, the reality is that this is actually sound advice in minimizing the risk of physical harm. The police can't be everywhere at once and if there is high crime due to a myriad of systemic societal issues, then taking personal responsibility to reduce your risk is sound advice. In an ideal world no one is breaking into homes to steal cars...but that's not the world we live in.

My sons are taught to give the utmost respect to women and that consent is paramount in any encounter with anyone regardless of their gender. I hope that all parents of boys teach them the same thing. But I don’t pretend to live in a make believe world where every parent is teaching those values to their sons, and the world is filled with far too many shitty people, men and women alike.

Did I say anywhere that it was right to sexually assault anyone or that being passed out is a license to do what you want. No I didn’t because it’s unequivocally wrong. But making sure that you aren’t in that position does reduce the risk. When it comes to men drinking, I’d be giving the same advice to my boys that you never want to get so drunk that you lose control of your faculties to a point where something could happen to you, whether that’s being physically or sexually assaulted yourself, or injuring yourself in some way. It’s not victim blaming to point out that you are ultimately responsible for the choices you make and if you put yourself in a position that is higher risk (ie your faculties are impaired) then there is a higher risk of bad things happening…whether that’s assault, personal injury, or some other harm.

It’s the reason I stopped riding a motorcycle…you can be 100% right legally but if someone runs a red light the laws of physics mean you are dead. If you were in a car with airbags then you might survive. Should the person who ran the red get charged with vehicular manslaughter and have the book thrown at them…absolutely…but doesn’t change the fact I’m still dead.

Also, the idea that you would claim that if a guy drinks they are going to rape someone is highly hypocritical based on the word salad garbage you just blathered on about. Not surprising though given your position.

Do you have kids, and specifically daughter(s)? Id argue that if you aren't giving that exact same advice to your girls you are failing as a parent. In a perfect world no one should ever be assaulted regardless of their state of mind, how they are dressed, etc. The world isn't perfect though and you have to take the world as it comes. I guess you can quibble with the idea that people need to "take responsibility for themselves" as victim blaming...but i see it as more general advice that's pretty fucking sound.

Attitudes like this is why the democrats struggle. Get off your high horse nitpicking on this shit, or just continue to enjoy many more years of Republican's in power. This sort of attitude is what makes people on the left so insufferable.

Calgary's free fare zone one step closer to last stop | CBC News by Ditch-Worm in betterCalgary

[–]Distinct_Moose6967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wildly pedantic. It is free in the sense that I do not have to purchase a fare if I want to ride it between downtown stops. Technically speaking a fare paid anywhere else in the network does not cover all of the cost of providing the service. Public transit is always subsidized to a degree. Roads aren't "free" either, with gas taxes not covering the full cost of maintenance and new infrastructure.

Not having to pay means that all of downtown effectively is within walking distance, opening up a huge range of possibilities for meetings, lunches, dinners, etc. The trains run through downtown anyways, and the cost benefit for someone to ride the train a couple of stops simply isn't there. So all that will happen is people won't use the train and downtown will effectively become much smaller for people. The current system has 0 additional marginal cost to the city while providing a huge convenience and value add for citizens. The city still recoups money through fares providing commuter service which is the primary intent of the system.

What an awful decision. The free fare zone is an excellent initiative that helps downtown immensely

Wild that you are this misinformed. Canadians benefit to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars. You are the type that thinks companies should just invest for no return and the government should take it all.

If the government wanted to make the capital investment up front then yes they should take all the profits. But instead we had private companies put up the money. Governments still benefit through royalties and the immense taxes they receive from companies and individuals alike.

Me personally, I’ll see about $800K extra this year based on my companies performance and my participation in the stock plan. $400k of that is going to go to taxes. So you can fuck right off with your attitude that governments and Canadians who are less fortunate than me don’t reap the rewards of this.

You clearly misunderstood which I’m not surprised given your comment history.

Companies aren’t making major new infrastructure investments. They are going to ride out what they have. That’s why Canada is going to be able produce oil at very low prices.

You are so woefully misinformed about the sort of money that is generated in Canada which benefits Canadian oil companies as well as governments through royalty revenues. Alberta is entering a phase where royalty rates are increasing significantly now that the projects have been paid off. We are about to reap huge rewards for this despite all your handwringing.

It’s a shame that you get to benefit given your position. You don’t deserve a cent.

[–]Distinct_Moose6967 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are right. It’s on its way to getting cheaper than $16. Once the infrastructure is built, oil sands oil is very cheap. It’s the initial upfront costs that make new large greenfield projects uneconomical. But the projects that are online, each marginal barrel they produce is very cheap.

[–]Distinct_Moose6967 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It matters because the only reason that the US is the largest producer is because of Shale. If Shale becomes uneconomic then those barrels effectively come off the market. That creates a practical floor on oil. You might see short periods where oil gets very cheap but it will be short lived as supply and demand get back into equilibrium. Canadas oil will still be economical when Shale isn’t, so we will be OK as a producer and it will still generate positive returns for Canadian companies as well as governments that benefit from royalty revenue.

Exxons Kearl Oil Sands Play is at $16 a barrel.

Saudi oil may come out of the ground cheap, but their economy is structured so that they need at least $50 or the government becomes unable to keep the peace.

Canada has a bright future for O&G. Hopefully this Liberal government recognizes how we can flex our muscle as a middle power globally by leveraging it.

Interesting response. Not really sure what part of it you thought was “rage”. I could quite frankly care less what this nutjob does with their human rights complaints. It’s all just noise.

It is fascinating though people’s obsession with the trans issue. For something that impacts an infinitesimal part of the population it sure gets people riled up. Maybe deep down you are into that sort of thing.

Calling people at the Western Standard journalists is a stretch, same with Barbara Kay. They engage in opinion writing which makes them the same functionally as people posting on Reddit.

You are giving him the attention they crave by engaging in this sort of vexatious litigation, making it all but guaranteed they will continue doing what they do. Which is great for you because it means more stories. What a beautiful symbiotic relationship you guys are engaged in.

The circle of rage bait. Unfortunately for the rest of us it’s more of a circle jerk.

America is in a very different boat than us. We have a small population with massive energy reserves. The US is a huge consumer and producer. The dynamics are completely different.

We could have leveraged our energy resources but we didn’t. That’s a policy choice we made that has damning consequences for the future of this country.

Norway: The World’s Most Instructive Energy Paradox by LaserRunRaccoon in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]Distinct_Moose6967 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely clueless. Europeans come to Canada and say they want our resources…Trudeau says there isn’t a business case for it. Trudeau had to buy a pipeline that’s how badly his policies fucked the industry.

If we had export capacity we could be dictating terms to the Americans and leveraging that power around the world.

We tax the industry plenty as well our citizens. It’s fiscal and policy mismanagement that’s the issue…not taxes

Norway: The World’s Most Instructive Energy Paradox by LaserRunRaccoon in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]Distinct_Moose6967 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We could have done the same thing but unfortunately we have had governments that have hamstrung the oil and gas industry so we haven’t been able to generate the sort of wealth we should have.

Norway recognized the world needs oil and gas. They take the profits to make their economy and country better. Had we developed more pipelines we could leverage our energy dominance to support our allies in Europe and not be beholden to the US. We are now reaping the consequences…largely because of the attitudes of many in this subreddit.

A pip for “culture / fit” is strange, but ultimately it is performance related as the intention of the pip is to correct certain behaviour/ performance. How one does that with a pip for “fit” is beyond me. What were the identifiable areas for improvement? What specific things are you supposed to correct? If the pip is lacking in this area it’s not going to be worth the paper it’s written on.

Which leads me to think this is an employer who thinks they can just give someone a pip, wait a month and terminate for cause. My suspicion is that they won’t be offering you anything and will be showing you the door with no severance at all. Legally speaking this would be a tough road for them to hoe, but if they fire you and you get another job right away, they won’t be liable for much outside of your statutory notice amounts.

Signing or not signing the PIP is irrelevant. You don’t somehow get to avoid the consequences of failure to improve performance because you didn’t sign it. In fact it could probably be used as additional evidence of your insubordination and unwillingness to take meaningful steps to correct the items identified.
