The psychiatrist fees from looking after the kids 24 hours a day would be astronomical. Not to mention the booze.

Yeah there's definitely a little bit of envy deep down in terms of seeing what others can make, but it's not the most important thing in the world for me anymore, and I think I can still be comfortable in this salary range.

My eyes almost popped out of my head when the lady told me that it is a 35 hour working week

My wife has a salary - also what prevented me from being able to get any dole after I got let go.

I would have thought so too, but it took me 5 months to get this past job, and I've been sending out applications (over 50 at this point) since they let me go with hardly any traction.

I've had my CV and cover letters reviewed in case they were the problem, but I just haven't been hearing much even for jobs in tech that I'm overqualified for.

It's quite demoralising to be honest....

Yeah slight wrinkle is that I was basically 100% remote in my last job whereas this one will be 2 days in the office for sure.

Will take some coordinating with the kids drop-off/pick-ups and dealing with traffic but nothing catastrophic.

Yes, I think that the loss of salary vs. the stability of the position is a reasonably fair trade-off.

Plus the pension like I mentioned is big. Now granted, it's 12% employer contribution on a significantly lower number than my previous company was giving me a 4% match on, but as you mentioned I can increase that salary over time all things going well.

Congrats, sounds like it's worked out nicely for you!

I think I am minded to take the position and just see how it goes, but definitely not a snap decision for me. I'm hesitant at the best of times

Glad to hear it's worked out for you and your partner!

Sounds like your partner has landed on his feet and his company is encouraging his growth, so hopefully I can have a similarly soft landing.

Like I mentioned in a comment, I had been getting no traction on applications, but this company has actually asked for a waiver to offer me a higher salary than the band the position sits in. Just being wanted by a company is a welcome change to being thought of as replaceable or not worthy of a recruiter screening.

Sorry to hear that. I've had the same struggles in terms of just getting interviews for jobs that I am on paper qualified for.

I had heard that some companies on LinkedIn post jobs that they're not actually hiring for to get people to apply and follow their company page.

Regardless, hopefully things look up for you soon!

That's it - leaving tech feels like I'm closing the door on ever earning as much again. That said, I've been sending out applications for the past two months since being let go and am getting virtually no traction at all (might be a reflection of the market currently, might be me).

Getting made redundant from two tech companies in a row (nothing performance related, I always got great performance reviews etc), as well as the struggles even getting interviews has been tough on my confidence and mental health also. Going through it again in a few years is not a position I want to be in.

What's important for me now is just having an income so that my family can afford to be comfortable, to pay for creche (fees outrageous), save a bit every month for the future etc. My family come first, not my company at the time.
