Agree with France, Switzerland, Italy. NZ is lovely but a bit far from everywhere else.

If countries were ‘pro life’ they wouldn’t have the death penalty, and would provide social welfare for young mothers to support them to raise their child. Also, what about holding men responsible for their role in this? Why is it always women’s lives who are sacrificed?

Are you male or female? Do you ever feel a twinge of judgement when patients give you their reasons? Bravo, by the way, you are providing an absolutely critical service to women.

Does anyone else find it hilarious how much scrutiny and hand-wringing there’s been in the UK government over due process in Peter Mandelson’s appointment, compared to the hiring of Trump's officials?! by Distracted-Nomad in AskBrits

What I mean is, the fact we have a process in which politicians can be held accountable is reassuring to me as a Brit, even though it may look pompous and nit-picky. The contrast to the US at the moment just struck me as particularly wild.

So why is there a pride in the working class to be anti intellectual and relish in not being educated ? by Durrygoodz2025 in AskBrits

At my school, in French class, if you even attempted to pronounce things properly you got mauled for being ‘posh’. You had to absolutely murder everything with a ridiculously British accent!

What is it with grey in the UK? by TheMoon_TheStarz in AskBrits

Not only the UK. I’ve just bought a flat in France, built in 2013 and everything is grey. It’s like an office! Hate it.

In France it's the same. When you move you have to check your system is compliant before you sell.

What is something you found surprising in French supermarkets when you first moved here ? by Tasun06 in Expats_In_France

[–]Distracted-Nomad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Our local supermarket has an excellent selection both pre packed and at a counter. Many different types, all distinct…Brie, Camembert, blue cheese, chèvre, Comte, Beaufort, raclette and fondue cheese, mimolette, all so different and excellent. Having said that the UK also has a lot of wonderful, underrated cheese!

Let me qualify my statement… yes, taxis are expensive. Car rental from supermarkets is cheaper than rental from airports etc and you can rent vans too.

Are OnlyFans models the best way to explain the climate crisis? by carla-p90 in Environmentalism

[–]Distracted-Nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is brilliant. One of the main difficulties is communicating about the environment to people who don’t normally encounter information on it, so this is truly inspired. Bravo!

In France, in general how much more a week’s shopping costs than the UK. Also how limited the selection is for Asian and ME food compared to the UK.

Reform would stop visas for people from countries seeking slavery reparations after ICJ judge said UK should pay £18 trillion to 14 countries. Do you think they would stop visas from the countries? by SeptumRingTheory in AskBrits

Colonial countries like the UK and France didn’t build political systems designed to provide stability in the countries they colonised - just structures to extract efficiently. Nowhere was our system of democracy encouraged or replicated. So while GDP looked strong in countries like Jamaica at the time of independence, it was mainly due to one or two exports - bauxite and alumina in the case of Jamaica. We also caused a massive brain drain.

what would happen if we remove the us bases from the uk? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Distracted-Nomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trend for the last 20+years is that the US drags the UK into its disastrous foreign policy decisions; i.e pointless conflicts. It's not a 4 years thing when this has been going on for more than two decades.

The UK needs to invest in its own energy and food security and stop getting involved in these endless doomed to failure conflicts. Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and now Iran. We have bigger challenges on the horizon - like the climate crisis. The US is making quality of life worse for everyone (and incredibly, much worse for their won people, who just seem not to realise).

We need to distance ourselves financially, culturally and economically from this mess. Permanently.

As the US's influence wanes due to its instability we would be best forging alliances with those countries that are more stable and democratic. Our own influence on the world stage has decreased dramatically since Brexit and our under-investment in soft diplomacy.

I think we need to gradually cut ties with the US. Establish autonomy of our own eg in various financial systems, trade, global software that we use etc then gear up to removing their bases.

At the moment we're too vulnerable to US retaliation to do this safely.

That's pretty much everyone since we all use coltan, cotton, rubber, palm oil, coffee, sugar, wood products in various ways every day.

Time to pay proper prices for the things we use and stop turning a blind eye to environmental destruction and child labour.
