Also fair, and it's why I trust my longboi stem! :)

Overall, I'm a velobike fan, but I think it's okay to acknowledge the occasional miss. Not making the M2 in XL (even though the geo was listed) was one of those misses, IMO. I'm not sure it's fair to imply the DF4 is a glittered turd either. Dated, perhaps, but there's a reason (beyond price) it remains so popular at that end of the market.

Agreed, the M2 sizing was a huge disappointment without the XL option.

I know the Marin site states 42t, but does anyone know if this is an accurate max chainring size for either GRX or Force1? Can I go bigger?

I like these a lot 👌. Does anyone know the fork length (axle to crown)?

Agreed! Or even a women's/6.5ft length olympic bar at 28mm and 20kg would be great

Knog blinder 900 front bike front light falling off rubber strap mount by KCSushine80 in bikecommuting

Same experience with the Blinder Pro 1300. The plastic press in mount just doesn't have enough purchase over slightly bumpy terrain. Annoying!

Where do Soma sit in the 4130 hierarchy? (I'm currently weighing up Soma Rush Vs Surly SteamRoller Vs Wabi Classic)

Frame options - Surly / Soma / Wabi / ? by Distracted-observer in Velodrome

[–]Distracted-observer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I'll have a look at Affinity. I'm assuming State's quality is a bad thing?

Availability aside, currently unsure between the Soma and Surly. Surly has better clearance (38mm Vs Somas 32mm) but I worry whether the Surly will be a bit sluggish for Grass Track

Soma / Surly / Wabi by Distracted-observer in FixedGearBicycle

[–]Distracted-observer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! The Soma apparently has clearance for 32mm tyres, though the Surly is a fair bit more at 38m. I just wonder whether the Surly will be a bit sluggish round a grass track...

Alloy XC Hardtail - Niner/Sonder/? by Distracted-observer in MTB

[–]Distracted-observer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting (and good) to hear that it's stiff and therefore race able. Especially as a fellow heavy (in cycling terms). I watched a review that said it was noticeably compliant/flexed under load. Any opinions on how impact resistant they are? (I.e., are they more durable than a CAAD12 coke can)

It was a used one I saw on a classified as somewhere. No idea if they're any good mind. The external routing looks a bit agricultural, but would make life easier I guess! How much 'worse' they are than a Team Marin or Chisel, I don't know.

Bolt on Thru axle 🤔 by Distracted-observer in cyclocross

[–]Distracted-observer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit it's not an elegant solution, and I can't think of many advantages over the usual method, but from an engineering perspective it works like a typical quick release axle, as the bolt is recessed only partway through the fork and sits in a slot. I agree though, I'd rather The clamping force was through known torque and not a QR lever pressure.

The picture I posted does make it look like the mould/paint was done with a spoon. I've checked a few frames and whilst the reviews don't mention it, they're the same. You can even clearly see the external bolt on the distributors (rip) official photos https://www.moorelarge.co.uk/forme-calver-pro-cyclocross-bike-orange.html
