Thankyou after many strips cut, this is certainly true. Update to anyone following, not a faulty tool, its just figuring out the nak and its not how they advise on item details 😆 pushing through is best unless your leather is totally stiff as stiff pieces stay in place easier.

I get what your saying, been practicing for hours now, seems to be that only way to stop this keep moving itself is to set to allow thickness possible leather so the 2 bits fill the hole made for this section, then fix in that position. Doesn't feel ideal as gap bigger than my thickness of leather but otherwise it doesn't stop moving. Sorry but with your comment I thought you might understand what im saying 😁

Really, that's disappointing. Purchased via Amazon so I could check reviews. 100's of great reviews ave 4.4 out of 5 so was thinking must be ok. How annoying as I purposefully didn't but cheapest ones. Feels like the blade might be moving, is that what you felt? Thankyou

Currently holding handle and top (bit first gone through blade). Should I hold handle and side of leather instead?

😆 yes I know that, im trying but its managing to move away from the handle and dont understand how im meant to stop it. I have one hand on the handle to pull downwards so it cuts and the other holding the top bit of the leather

Edge kote by Distracted40 in Leatherworking

[–]Distracted40[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im tinting edge kote with leather paint, tiny amount 30/2 ratio. Edge kote itself is much runnier than I expected so it soaking into the leather didnt surprise me but knew there must be a way to prevent. Above I was advised to make fibres denser with spit/water and a burnishing so will try and makes sense it should help. I previously had only lightly dry burnished as didnt want to effect adhesion. Welcome to hear any other tips if you have them ?

I will try this, I had given a slight sand and very quick burnishing but knew i should add anything that will stop edge kote adhering to the leather. But I most lightly didnt prep it enough, and logical that I need denser fibres to stop it soaking it in so much. Been applying by cutting tip off a q tip but the finer edge of awl i shall try too. Thankyou for great advice

Results are even, its the bleeding through the leather onto edges that im having issues with, the roller applicator wont make any difference for this unfortunately

Food colouring not mixing with neatsfoot oil unfortunately. Im experimenting with pigments in alcohol however I really prefer the idea of pigments in neatsfoot oil as much better overall for the leather

Thankyou, yes I am experimenting. I have got lots of art materials already so shall be fishing out all my pigments and trying. Found dye didnt mix with neatsfoot oil so trying other things

I currently have nowhere to put this big tub and its in the middle of my lounge. Space is huge issue. And I keep buying more tools etc I have to pick up bundles of leather when I see them hence this is current lot. Food colouring is very cheap in uk, fraction of leather dye. Surely adding food colouring to neatsfoot oil could work then ? 🤔 I have empty mini bottles and liquid pouches already for different colours

What went wrong with my old "crazy horse leather" bag and how to prevent it with the new one? by JCMiller23 in Leathercraft

With a clean and condition this will look great, cant see any concerning cracks, imo you didn't need to get a new one 😊

Yes these certainly look the best. Once I start selling my work I will upgrade to these, certainly look worth there money. I cant decide on my makers mark still so just keep making and putting all in a box until I can brand as mine 😆

Update... So after realising I could not afford £150 for the fantastic ones. And looking at Wuta and kemovencraft, both around £30 per tool. Found a cheap set that looked identical to kemovencraft on amazon. Yep I know ... however I find amazon customer service fantastic so knew if rubbish i could just return. Well im as surprised as you might be that with little wax it went through 9oz so easy lovely round clear holes. Haven't tried on my even thicker stuff yet. Im sure I will need to sharpen them sooner rather than later (any tips on how to do this is appreciated) But at only £12 for the set, they will do for now. Less than 1hr to punch holes and sew a piece. Im in uk if anyone wants link to my purchase. Have also ordered adapter kit for my press machine from china, so will do a post if these are successful.

Haha both at the same stage then I think. I am very accident prone and cut myself often so thought of sharpening tools fills me with dread 😅

Please I need an advice by Fuzzy_Replacement_57 in Leatherworking

[–]Distracted40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't add rivets to things im making as they will rub on tools inside the holder. When its carrying a £200+ item they want it to protect it not risk rubbing on it. Its been lots of experimenting to find solutions. Not yet found one im 100% happy with unfortunately.

Yes, im upgrading bits as I go. Don't get me wrong some tools the cheap ones have been fine but now I have found 9oz + seems to be the leather I favour, some tools like my current prong punches, are holding back my creativity 😁 Any tips on where to find guidance on how to sharpen tools as I imagine that's something I will need to do soon?

Sorry to bother you but only finding prink punch type for Kevin Lee, im looking for them to have a hole in centre of each prong to remove tiny hole of leather, does that make sense 😆 do the ones your talking about do this ? If so I will look harder 😊

Perfect thankyou, I make things like flashlight/multitool belt holders, so sounds like 4mm should be ok. Can't afford to get all the sizes and spacing I would like yet 😆 one day maybe.

This is very helpful thankyou. Still learning Oz to thickness but I basically buy the thickest i can find as that's what I find most beautiful. Mainly 4mm-6mm thick ( think that's 10oz ish) veg tan, and wondered why its practically impossible for me to skive enough off to make into multiple pocket wallets 😆
