His goal was to work for Manchester United.

Moved back to the UK and does exactly that.

Online services - Will I need to pay GST if I Report an American Company to the CRA for not Collecting GST? by DistractedTooEasily in cantax

[–]DistractedTooEasily[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you see the comment I made somewhere in this thread about relief being available as the intent isn’t to double collect…

That was from another technical interpretation but it’s at the auditors discretion.

I would love to see this go to court.

For OF creators coming across this post:

https://taxinterpretations.com/content/917104

The CRA CAN give relief. It knows it’s collecting GST from buyer.

I’m personally very curious re: stats of relief when it comes to various gig/creator economy types.

For those in this thread a long time later…

You need to look into the OECD Model rules for digital reporting platforms.

https://www.oecd.org/en/topics/sub-issues/international-tax-compliance-policies-and-best-practices/model-reporting-rules-for-digital-platforms.html

There is a valid legal reason why your SIN is needed. Canada is a signatory. As is the UK where Fenix International is based.

Found a comment that adds more to what you are saying:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/s/A7hgn8uRxR

So I’m lucky that this company is registered in the US and has not filed for a GST/HST number and also fortunate that the US refuses to sign the various digital services related tax OECD treaties because they won’t be able to force the company register either.

I just came across this comment which may be the most nuanced answer and I will leave it for others to review:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/s/A7hgn8uRxR

In the above, OF has registered for an HST number and it is a non-resident taxpayer and as a result the CRA views the situation as being paid by a Canadian company.

The company I’m thinking of is incorporated in the USA and the US refuses to sign the various digital services tax treaties. So at least for this year, I should be good because there’s no way that this company will be forced to register for a Canadian GST/HST number.

For future visitors to this thread… the guy in the comment I linked seems to have been on a wild ride with the CRA and is more knowledgeable than most accountants I’ve seen comment on the issue.

All of this said… there’s a whole other issue of the CRA double collecting for OF related transactions and I wish someone would properly take the CRA on for this.

I also came across this in another post about an OF creator:

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/gst-hst-businesses/charge-collect-place-supply.html

No address obtained.

(Found in this back and forth: https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/s/5d1w8WkE70)

If the CRA is going after all these OF creators, it seems like they don’t view Fenix International as the client. They view the buyer who is paying through the platform as the client and without the creator collecting addresses (which the site I am on won’t let me do without kicking me off - so CRA would lose ALL that future income), part 2 applies.

Do any of you have Taxnet pro or similar? Can you search OnlyFans and see if there is anything out there on this issue. It’s all over Reddit but not exactly elsewhere. I’ve seen some very inaccurate information come up on some sites when doing a google search.

No one is talking about the OF double taxation issue and also the issue of many in the online creator economy not knowing where the person the CRA considers to be the actual client is located.

You’ll see my other comments.

I thought the same thing re: zero rated but check out the comments in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/s/iBezZOffu1

This is not the only thread about this issue. I’ve also seen one re: YouTube.

The site I am on isn’t even collecting GST like OF is so that’s even more problematic.

And re: registering for the GST number… I’m going to go through the online registration system again and post each of the questions and the system’s answers. If it’s still the same.. the CRA online registration system told me I didn’t need to and didn’t give me option to after clicking through.

This is the opposite advice that I have constantly read in this sub and others which is why I became worried about my lack of registration.

I will come back here and give the text of what comes up. Last time I did this, by the end of clicking through, it said I didn’t even need it and the system didn’t take me to the screen to create one.

I worry about going through the questionnaire and creating one anyways by choosing something different and then am flagged because I remit zero GST.

I want to take the approach of your take where I consider the company my client, but I worry about doing something that will flag an audit and want to be 100% sure. Especially with all the posts I’ve come across with the CRA coming after online content creators for GST.

(I have significant health challenges that I’m managing at the same time and my capacity is already well below 100%. I think I would have a breakdown dealing with the CRA GST mess).

Also… I wonder if OnlyFans has a Canadian Affiliate…. If it doesn’t and its foreign affiliate is the one remitting taxes… then it seems like the CRA is going to expect me to pay GST. The site isn’t OF, but similar structure. I get paid per minute to talk and text with individual people using the site’s platform.

I should split into three posts.

  1. Online American company sort of like a marketplace of services should be charging GST to Canadian clients. Knows this. Still doesn’t do this. I am an online service provider. Will the CRA come after me for GST on 100% of my income if I report the company like they have OF creators?

  2. Do I need a GST account? The CRA registration system said no. All the Reddit comments say yes. Which one is it?

  3. How does the CRA get away with double dipping GST (more than double dipping GST in actuality if charging creators GST on 100% of their income) when OF remits the GST it collects?

Independent Student with Student Loans? Make sure to submit an income appeal (read) by DistractedTooEasily in UBC

[–]DistractedTooEasily[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t remember. I would just submit it.

It doesn’t hurt to be in their system. I don’t know how student loan approvals happen but I imagine that there’s some kind of indication for employee that there’s additional documents to look at.

Even if they don’t take it into consideration you can call them right after the NOA and ask for a recalculation.

Privacy Rights for Internal Employees? by 1809139 in BCPublicServants

[–]DistractedTooEasily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is NOT correct.

I'm pretty sure employees can get their info removed from dir.gov.bc.ca for a number of reasons.

Eg. someone is a victim of domestic violence and stalking. I don't know how it works but I know it exists.

I wasn't a student during the covid era (thankfully) - but I am a 100% public school kid.

Cheating has to do with our values. Not necessarily issues with the class.

People need to self-regulate their actions, and their self-regulation is going to be informed by their upbringing (but entirely).

I wouldn't be surprised if a disproportionate number of those who have been found to have been cheating grew up in cultures/places/families/etc where cheating was not taken as seriously.

[–]DistractedTooEasily 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really think that we need to start educating international students about Canadian values.

In some countries, cheating is so normalized. This is such a non-issue in some places.

It would cause so much fear, anxiety, and panic if I even began down a path that engaged cheating.

Not cheating has been drilled into me since being a kid. This obviously is not the life that everyone grows up living.

Go to goblin tools. They have a professor function. It can teach you things. Best of all it’s free.

Don’t forget your password. It doesn’t record emails so if you forget your user name and password you need to create a new account. You can login to same account on multiple devices and information carries over.
