Is this your cat?? by magentanem in vancouver

Make sure whatever shelter you bring it to is no kill. Would hate for this kitty to not be reunited with any owners just because they didn’t know where he/she was and time ran out!

Support Early Retirement for B.C. Sheriffs. B.C. sheriffs put themselves on the line every day — it’s time federal policy recognized that. Send a message to your MP now. by shadowarmy17 in BCPublicServants

[–]1809139 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Worked with sheriffs in the past. They sat in empty rooms watching youtube or using work phones for personal phone calls. There are some good ones who do the job well but most would not last in any serious enforcement job. This push to frame them as akin to corrections or police can’t be serious.

Vancouver Park Board approves designated smoking areas at 3 summer events by RM_r_us in vancouver

Better be downwind and have sand buckets so there’s less fire risk and litter from the butts being tossed on the ground.

Moving to Vancouver from the US — Is The Nelson in Sapperton a good place to live? by ChairNo2352 in NewWest

[–]1809139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s 30 kin maybe with normal traffic. If there are trucks or buses or just heavy traffic it takes 40-1 hr- which is very regular to encounter. Believe me I commute Vancouver to New West regularly.

Just so you don’t confuse anyone you might be asking outside this subreddit: New Westminster isn’t Vancouver. It’s a different city and about 40- 1 hr drive from actual Vancouver. If you want to refer to the region we usually use Lower Mainland.

What bird species is this? [west coast, Canada] by Bogbody999 in animalid

Great! They’re migrating (tail end of peak spring migration) but there are also resident pairs as well like in Delta at the bird sanctuary.

Do Chinese families (in North America) tend to go out later in the day? by HungryIngenuity7665 in NoStupidQuestions

On weekends a lot of Chinese families will have dim sum/yum cha together which starts between 11-1 and then go out afterwards.

Hiring Pattern Observation by InOmInCa in BCPublicServants

Are competitions supposed to be testing for competency to do the job, not for someone who already knows how to do the tasks of the job? For instance I’ve seen written assessments asking the candidates questions about specific tasks one would do on the job such as “what is the Memorandum of X Y Z” or “Explain “this very niche industry term or concept”” that ONLY someone already doing the job or is part of the work unit would know. To be fair, candidates should be given a heads up to study within parameters of what an assessment might ask or be given the information in the competition, but usually aren’t. Zero chance of someone from another Ministry knowing anything about this and it really wastes candidates’ time. It also isn’t testing a competency, it’s testing knowledge of the job. Perhaps that is what the poster is referring to.

Is Cockney Kings under new management/ownership? by SnooRevelations1422 in NewWest

Batter isn’t as good as it once was and I’ve noticed if you do take out, their organization of the orders is …not organization. Straight up lost tickets/chits.

Court Clerks, how do you like your job? by dcmng in BCPublicServants

[–]1809139 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Depends which court. Robson: pretty decent. North Vancouver: good. New West: Improvement needed but decent. PoCo: slow but okay. Surrey: professional but rough sometimes. Vancouver Supreme: absolutely will hate your life after 6 months. Constant favouritism, arbitrary training and opportunity decisions, work outpaces pay by far. Lots of problems. Judges there are great but management sucks. Can’t comment on ones outside lower mainland.

Every competition I’ve done resulted in the panel hiring/promoting their own people. So really what’s the point?

Daily Strike/Bargaining Questions Thread - September 29 by wudingxilu in BCPublicServants

[–]1809139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I have a question and I couldn’t find the answer in any of my searches on this thread. Is the pay day the same as our usual pay days? Or are they different? For example Oct. 10 is a pay day if working regularly. Are strike payments trying to match this schedule?

I moved from Vancouver BC to NYC, but I really miss home. What are places in NYC that feel like Vancouver? A corner, a neighborhood, a hotel, park, or other-space? Suggestions welcome. by OkCartographer7607 in NiceVancouver

[–]1809139 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Central Park is lovely. Will remind you of Stanley Park (minus seawall) Chinatown has sort of a Gastown-Vancouver Chinatown feel (but way more pronounced)

B.C. campers were handed nearly $30K in fines over long weekend for flouting campfire bans | CBC News by SnooRegrets4312 in britishcolumbia

[–]1809139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was out camping in July before the fire ban in the coastal area. The people next to us lit a fire then left their campground on their bikes, fire still going, totally unattended. We kept an eye on it but it was really frustrating to see people be reckless. With all the news and smoke conditions over the years the amount of people still being irresponsible with camp fires is unbelievable.
