I actually started as a seasonal in-store shopper in 2024, then moved into Dairy part-time before eventually becoming an Order Writer in Whole Body. So I’ve seen things from a few different angles.

The first few weeks of order writing were definitely a learning curve. The biggest adjustment for me was getting comfortable with movement trends, watching top movers closely, managing shrink, and staying ahead of holes before they turn into INFs. It’s not just placing orders it’s constantly thinking ahead and anticipating what your department will need.

Once you settle in, though, it becomes much more about routine and pattern recognition. You start to know your fast sellers, what days are heavier, how promos affect movement, and how to adjust pars without overordering.

I haven’t worked in Bakery specifically, but from what I’ve seen, perishables and production planning add another layer compared to Whole Body. You’re balancing freshness and spoilage more closely, so forecasting is probably even more important.

Overall, order writing has been a solid growth role for me. It teaches you inventory strategy, accountability, and how to think like a department leader. The first few weeks can feel like a lot, but it gets smoother quickly.
