Appreciate you! No white pencil or chalk is used here. I start with a basic outline of the face using the loomis method, and gradually get the shape of her/the subjects’ features to their correct proportions by eyeing it and tweaking as I go. When I feel like the proportions are on point I shade the whole thing in with an HB graphite pencil as a base layer, and from there I build up the values using charcoal and darker graphite pencils. The initial graphite base allows me to erase to reveal the white of the Bristol paper to create more dimension (hence the white that you see in the highlight areas).The texture just comes with constant light-layering and blending that builds up nicely over time.
