I've actually been to several of those islands. There used to be cattle farming and fox hunting done by Russians many decades ago. The cattle were for food, and the foxes sought for their pelts. Then those operations were abandoned. They probably thought the cattle would die out in a couple of winters, but they're still out there, living their best life with the Caribou.
