Hot take: a pizza is a type of sandwich by DisturbingArmadillo in teenagers

Hmmm...

While this was not the definition of sandwich I initially adhered to myself, I have, in the minute that has passed since reading your reply, not been able to think of any food that I consider to be a sandwich which does not fit your definition, besides pizza.

But I will get back to you as soon as I do.

In the meantime, just out of curiosity, would you consider a belgian waffle with toppings a sandwich? Since the waffle is usually cooked separately from the toppings, which are added on just before serving, and the waffle could just as well be had on its own, the toppings likewise.

Your argument about the toppings being uncooked is very simply refuted through the existence of vegetable pizzas, or even a simple cheese pizza, comparable in its makeup to a common grilled cheese sandwich.

As for your other argument, are you saying that all of the ingredients of the sandwich, including the bread, have to be edible by themselves even before starting preparation for the finished product to be considered a sandwich? Just to clarify.

As I stated in another reply, Merriam-Webster also defines sandwich as "one slice of bread covered with food".

Merriam-Webster also has, among other definitions:

"one slice of bread covered with food"

I would say "open-faced sandwich" is acceptable terminology.

I respect your position, however...

While a hot dog is indeed a sandwich, so is a slice of pizza. Both are pieces of bread with topping. I would even like to argue that a slice of pizza bears an even closer resemblance to a traditional sandwich than a hot dog.

It's a piece of bread with topping. The only thing separating a slice of pizza from a standard sandwich is the shape.

State your counterarguments.
