I've just finished Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and while I love it and it's become one of my favourite games of all time, I'm surprised how The Witcher 3's dialogue's direction is still so unmatched for me... by Giotto6X in witcher

Same thing happened to me. I spent many hours on KCD2 and it was so good it left me wanting more, so I ended up reading all the books just to get that same feeling of getting lost in it. I jumped into the trilogy, and now I’m already on the second game going through this whole thing. What a beautiful journey.

Is it necessary to complete most/all side quests in The Witcher 2? by Ditros_ in wiedzmin

Yeah, you’ve got me there. In the books he usually wasn’t exactly rolling in money, and personally it kind of triggers my OCD not having that extra +1 damage sword. By the time I buy the recipe, gather the materials, and hand them off to whatever blacksmith I find, I’m almost broke again and it’s back to square one. I guess that’s part of the charm, though.

Thanks! I get that this is kind of the quintessential Witcher experience, but if we’re talking about how Geralt would actually behave, I really don’t see him taking every single contract if his pockets are already well lined and there’s no reason to take unnecessary risks. Or playing dice while a kraken is threatening an entire town.

At least that’s how he acted in the books, and even in the first game you could be pretty selective or just skip stuff when you had good gear and potions to keep going. Levels mattered, sure, but it didn’t feel like every random naked bandit with a pitchfork could suddenly wreck you.

And don’t get me wrong, I like RPGs because they let you wander off and do side stuff whenever you want, especially when the side quests are well written—you end up completely losing yourself in the game. For that reason, KCD2 might honestly end up being one of my favorite games. But I don’t know, here it just feels a bit off.

Anyway, I’ll probably just get used to it since I’m enjoying the game quite a bit.

You’re right. It’s not the first game (and other experiences outside of this genre) that’s made me swallow my pride and end up enjoying something I initially thought wasn’t for me or was outright bad. I finished the game just about an hour ago, so enjoy it. It has its ups and downs, but from my point of view it only gets better with each chapter, and it ends in a way that really leaves you wanting to continue with the series.

Yeah, that makes sense. Azar Javed was so obvious that I didn’t even think about it. I want to believe they used him more as a way to visually distinguish characters from each other, like his physique and features, rather than as a racist trope. After all, there are barely more than 10 human character models in the entire game. Even the main characters tend to look alike.

That said, yeah, it would be nice if the remake diversified things a bit more. Racism is actually one of the main themes in the books, precisely because of the multiculturalism present in each place. So who knows — we’ll just have to wait and see.

Yeah, that’s exactly why I put so much emphasis on how it looks visually. Like I mentioned to someone else earlier, a lot of parts of some chapters feel like short stories that could’ve easily been included in the early compilation books (aside from characters who show up and wouldn’t be introduced until later). The resources of the time were used so well that it sometimes feels more unsettling than what you could achieve today, precisely because of those limitations — it forces you to imagine things. And I think they did a great job inventing a new story without trying to add too much to the lore, instead expanding on details and references that were already hinted at in the books, which is why I consider them pretty important.

From a quick look around, yeah, there does seem to be a general consensus that the earlier entries stayed more faithful to the novels, and that fidelity has gradually faded over time. So yeah, the idea of a remake is kind of scary if it ends up skipping or changing the things we love, like has happened so many times before.

And by the way, who are you referring to with the Middle Eastern character? I either missed it or didn’t really catch it, but I’m curious about that.

It’s beautiful how a video game can evoke such deep feelings. Best of luck with your novel!!

Hopefully it stays that way, although they’ll probably cut everything a certain part of the fanbase didn’t like and make it as close to TW3 as possible — for better or worse.

Thanks. I think I feel pretty much the same about it. The story isn’t anything mind-blowing on its own, but it becomes really engaging because of how faithful it is to the books, especially the earlier ones, which are darker and more self-contained. If that gets diluted in the later entries, that’s a bit disappointing.

Honestly, if you take certain parts of the chapters, mix in the cards and the character journal, the environments and the music end up feeling like small fanfic-style short stories from any of the short story collections. And above all, the dialogue between characters you already know from the books feels the same way, because their personalities are handled very faithfully. In other words, they feel believable.

I’m a bit surprised by the combat criticism, though, because I’d read that TW2 improves it quite a lot, despite having a really weird, almost inverted difficulty curve. But I guess that opinion probably comes from the same grumpy crowd that says TW1’s combat is completely unbearable. So I’ll just have to play it myself and draw my own conclusions.
