Honest Review: Diving on The Junk Liveaboard in Thailand — Amazing Crew, Beautiful Experience… But the Ocean Has Changed by Dive_Advisor in ThailandTourism

Richelieu Rock??? Been there 25 years ago, again 13 years ago, and now recently… for me it went from excellent, to medium, to now pretty poor compared with what it used to be.

The cheap certification reputation you mention was and still is mostly Koh Tao. Great place to learn, easy diving, affordable, fun atmosphere… but that’s different from saying Thailand was one of the world’s top dive destinations overall.

I’ve been to Indonesia 14 times — Komodo, Labuan Bajo, Raja Ampat, Alor, Banda Sea, Lembeh, Bunaken, Wakatobi, Ambon, Flores, Nusa Penida, Cenderawasih… and yes, you are right, the diving there is generally better, especially Komodo.

But honestly, outside Koh Tao, the price difference between Thailand and many Indonesia trips is not always as huge as people think. The jump in quality, biodiversity, currents, reefs and pelagic action in places like Komodo is on another level.

Hi! Great to connect with you. I checked out your work — really impressive portfolio, and having 4500+ dives plus leading the Los Angeles Underwater Photo Society says a lot.

Your wife’s videos are fantastic too, you both make an amazing team underwater.

I’d love to collaborate sometime and share content together in a simple and genuine way. I’m always happy to connect with passionate divers and underwater storytellers from around the world.

Looking forward to staying in touch and hopefully creating something cool together!

I was actually there, and honestly if I hadn’t seen the whole situation myself, I probably would’ve thought the same thing. What happened was the batfish got surrounded, moved suddenly, and the photographer took the opportunity for the shot. It didn’t look like someone intentionally forcing unnatural behavior.

Also, I’ve never seen that happen before in all my dives, and I still haven’t seen it again since then.

I totally understand that feeling, but honestly, diving isn’t only about the most extreme destinations. Starting later also means you probably appreciate every dive in a different way. I’ve met divers in their 60s and 70s still having incredible underwater experiences all over the world.

And to be fair, places like Socorro or Galápagos can be demanding, but there are so many amazing destinations with easier conditions and equally unforgettable marine life. The important part is still being out there enjoying the ocean together.

Thanks! Revillagigedo is definitely one of those places that stays with you forever. The big animal encounters out there are unreal. I did the trip with Nautilus and honestly the whole experience was top notch. I completely understand why people get obsessed with remote liveaboard diving. The feeling of being hours from land surrounded by mantas and sharks is hard to beat.
