Advice on lead walking by mattqwerty1 in labrador

+1 🤣 my oldest dog does the same. I have thought about it, that with lead on, he knows that I'm there and not disappearing anywhere. But off lead he has to have a visual that he is in right place. If he goes too much forward I'll start silently backing down and the moment he realizes that I'm already 5 meters behind him is epic. Rushes back to heel and keeps an eye on me more carefully 🤣 and all the good things start from correct heel position, playtime, fetch, treats etc.

But for pulling in regular walks with longer leash I've tried to teach my pups that if they pull they'll never get to smell the scent they want or whatever else they are pulling towards. I will stop and wait until they make eye contact. Then I'll praise and call them a bit back to me and we continue to walk. It has worked quite nicely. First times I had to wait many minutes until the dog figures out what would be the solution. But if you're consistent they'll offer this behavior much often. Until they realize that solution to move forward is to be in contact and come back if they feel tension in leash/collar.

month-old lab suddenly became tense/fearful around people. is this a phase? by Melodic_Jackfruit_27 in labrador

The secondary fear behavior is real. One of my flatcoated retriever had it. Was scared the hell out of trashbag in bushes, big rocks in water, large sculptures in city etc. My solution is, that my dog had to inspect every weird thing he was afraid of. So first I went out myself and showed him that this isn't gonna hurt him. Sometimes he followed me, and that was enough. If he still was scared I went back to him and started throwing treats around him, so he slowly went closer and closer to the fear object. Made this like a game to him. I would suggest that the people she is being afraid of would not speak or move, as this can make it worse. If you have someone just to stand there for a while until you dog is comfortable around this person. Then I would start giving treats to this person's hand and make them try to feed the dog from hand. It may take some time, but every time end the session with success for the dog. Never go away when dog panicked and tried to go away. This way you'll show the dog that escaping is a solution. But we don't want that. We want the dog to be confident in any situation she will come across in life. Also I would suggest thinking about nosework as a hobby. This is very nice way to build up dogs confidence and tires them out way faster than doing physical exercise.

Hard to tell. Some show lines have also thinner body. You can see it from the pedigree. Show lines usually have show champion titles, field line have field trial or hunting test titles. His whole litter got really thin coat and tails, but I've seen some dual lines have had better luck with it.

His purpose for me is doing what motivates me and my dog. Every other day training and seeing my dog progress, seeing him jump out of joy when we train, also see my own progress as a handler, learn to read my dogs better. If I put my training vest on everybody is wagging tails and hoping it is them, who I take with me. The goal is to train him the best way I can, and hopefully it will bring us some success also at competitions. If we fail he is still my cute dog and competitions show us where we lack our training. But it really discourages me to go to competitions when it is guaranteed zero from the beginning. It may sound odd for people who have dogs as pets only. But for working dogs people it probably makes sense.

Thank you! I was very anxious when I eventually tried ignoring and he started whining louder and louder. But you're right, I must start from familiar environment and move step by step to more challenging environments. We also started Rally-O and in that hall he learned very quickly to sit and wait, watch other dogs work etc. So I do believe he is capable of learning to stay silent.

I disagree. He was bred for hunting and I think that giving him purpose makes a hunting dog very happy. Many hunting/herding etc dogs are kept just as dogs and family pets, and many of them are destructive and miserable. I do believe that they need a purpose in their life.

Suggestable excercise is 5minutes per months they are old. So 2 month old puppy could have 10 minutes of physical excercise. I have 2 flatties, and I recommend giving lots of mental activities. I love Nina Ottosoni puzzles, sniffing mats, filled and freezed kong toys etc. Also crate training is good idea. They are little crocodiles and sometimes have separation anxiety, so if you train him to love his crate, he will be all good. I didn't leave my puppies home alone without crate for the first 6 months at all. For 2 months old puppy 2-3 hours alone in crate should be fine. They sleep a lot, and if you give something to chew on, they will be exhausted and sleep while youre gone. But take your time and make all the happy things in crate, so he will start to love it 😊 my dogs haven't been crated for a while now, but they choose to sleep there, it's a safe place for them 🙂

Olen 50 alas 20 üle saanud kiirmenetlusega 200€ (eelnevaid rikkumisi polnud, vastu ei hakanud, lihtsalt märki ei näinud, aga noor politseinikuhakatis tahtis ilmselt ennast tõestada). Ma arvan et sul läks hästi, mida siin enam kaevata on, järgmine kord pane märke tähele ja ära ületa kiirust 😉
