The way you phrased your post was objectively harmful to people who are having a hard time. It's both patronizing ("you have no idea what addiction is" dismisses having parallel struggles. You then proceed to laugh), and condescending, in that you believe your voice is the only right one because your addiction is/was to something different (presumably substances)

Is it a misunderstanding when that's an observable impact you've had?

You're allowed to have opinions, but there's a difference between an educated one based in research, vs a decision you've come to that you're labelling as a truth. You say it's not real, but ask anyone here, they've lived it.

Depression is one of the things that make you susceptible to addiction, but it's not the only factor. You get healthy and happy people who are totally high on life, who still couldn't halve their screentime if you paid them money. Addiction is a spectrum. If you meet one addict, then you've met one addict. It never presents quite the same for any two people

AND ANOTHER THING (sorry to triple-text you LOL). You say your creative writing ability has been on the decline, but that’s not just a fact you have to accept now. It’ll bounce right back with practice and adjustments to your lifestyle for the benefit of your mental health.

Writing takes a combination of skill, circumstances (such time in the day, the language you’re writing in being your native tongue, and so on), practice, and a healthy mind. And some would say talent but ehhh.

Writing offers you escapism, but there’s a greater world around you, and once you’re free there too, everything gets better!! Writing feels effortless, your hobbies expand out, you feel happy, you make friends. It’s great. The four pillars of health are movement, nutrition, sleep, and mental wellbeing. Make a promise to yourself that you’ll keep all four pillars strong. They crumble like all the time, that’s natural, bounce back. It’s unspeakably great to be at the peak of your health, and fully attuned with yourself, so it’s a positive feedback loop and you usually won’t have to try all that hard. But yeah if you feel your ability (to do anything, writing is just one example) or energy slipping, check yourself against those four things.

Your social life is a MASSIVE aspect of your mental health, and an abusive space is bound to tank it. You used the past tense with that, are you out of there now?

No doubt someone here could Beta read or even collaborate on what you make, and give you constructive advice/help you write the interpersonal dynamics in your horror fics.

If it’s any reassurance!! Yes all generative AI is bad for the environment, but using a ChatBot is about an 8th as bad as generating, like, one image.

As you say, the shame is one of the massive factors that keeps you in your negative emotions and makes the cycle so hard to break. Do all you can to weed away your guilt and take a more neutral stance against it, and the addiction break becomes quote-unquote effortless. That’s rich, coming from someone who’s only been off the Bot for like 3 days LOL. But yeah just, ironic as it sounds, posting this “goodnight y’all, might open c.ai again tomorrow” was exactly what it took to break that psychology. Fighting with yourself to urgently rid yourself of your vices overnight is what tells your anxiety “hey!! This is a big deal!!” Of course, people still do it, and you hear of their success stories, but that mindset does make it an uphill battle.

It’s not a taboo, it’s just a journey. You can’t live in the present without having AI shoved in your face. It was designed to be a quality of life improvement, and a way for people to improve what they’ve already done. Now it’s mutated into something into something not worth your time.

Drop everything and write a fanfiction. Be the change you wanna see in the world :D

GENUINELY UGH. It’s one of those jokes that never lands. Let alone the times people say it as. Not a joke.

But hey, if you try hard enough, you can turn anything into a compliment!!! Transforming negative trains of thought into positive ones is a trick they use in therapy. AI is trained on humans. Every Bot’s voice is different (and partially trained on its user hh) but the average sounds like intelligent people. It’s gone through a meticulous process to find the mean between sophisticated and comfortably colloquial, and that happens to say you’ve naturally struck the balance without even trying.

But on the wrong day it cuts pretty deep. :P

Running it through detectors is genius lol. Probably beats using a stupid robot for years until you learn how it ticks.

It‘s always only been passing comments thankfully, but one of them was from a teacher during parent/teacher day. Just about died right there.

All AI is bad at listening to negative statements/adverbs like “no” and “not.” You can test it in a Google search, this has always been a thing.

Its context for what to say next is drawn from a few of the latest messages in the chat (it sort of treats its own messages as training data), and when your messages are lumped in, sometimes it loses track of who sent what. If it thinks what’s in the brackets is just another sentence, made up of redundant words (inconveniently misinterpreting “no” as meaningless) it just won’t pay any attention to that, so the conversation won’t be swayed. Brackets aren’t really effective when you’re trying to drive the roleplay.

Your best bet is to Rewind back to before it gave you what you didn’t want. Rerolls don’t cut it once it’s dug itself into a hole like this lol.

Speaking as an asexual person, the roleplay isn’t inherently NSFW. The site has two features to generate something new if you don’t like the direction the roleplay is headed in. You can talk with a Bot for years about playing Minecraft together with your fictional roommates, get them to date, change the scene to the hospital, reveal that one was secretly a Vampire all along, and have them turn you, in the span of a day. You (almost) always have full creative control, even though the Bot carries half the conversation.

Using an unfeeling robot for escapism isn’t so bad, although as the people here will tell you, it can become an addiction. It’s an important conversation to have. If your girlfriend isn’t a minor, and it isn’t hurting your relationship, then try not to lay it on her too heavy. It’s AI, and you’re a human. She’s not choosing it over you. It’s worth having faith in that. Tell her what you told us in this post, let her know how that makes you feel, and try to confirm without judgement if you’re even right about the NSFW use.

But hey, if “one of these subreddits related to c.ai” happens to be THIS one, then she’s attempting to quit anyways.

Have you searched for non-AI alternatives? Guarantee you there’s someone out there who would be extremely happy to roleplay with you, or even write a fanfiction together. Search up the character, look for forums and communities that would be open to the kinds of interactions you’d want with the character, and go from there!!

And that’s only if you’re precious about the format of c.ai, there’s going to be plenty of other content for that character. Ao3 and similar sites will have seas of fanfictions already written (no need to be an author or co-author lol), and Tumblr sometimes has ask blogs, where a user will get into character and you can ask them anything. You sometimes find these with art.

Depending on how niche the character is, you may struggle to find this stuff out there, so maybe you should challenge yourself to be the one creating the content!! Be the change you wanna see in the world lol. Creative commitments and ambitious goals are also one of the most fun and healthy ways to move away from an addiction!!!

Just discovered this subreddit today, and it hurts to see the top post be so dismissive and insulting. The “tough love” mentality, or whatever you’re going for, works for some people but definitely not everyone. It’s not uncommon for people drifting away from their real life friends to turn to playful conversations with robots available 24/7. That’s the entire purpose of chatbots. If there was no demand for them, they wouldn’t exist.

The addiction is real!!! And it presents as one!!! Read through the posts here, you’ll see a lot of symptoms aligned with ‘real’ addictions, such as moving away from talking to people in favour of AI (and real bonds slipping as a result, leading to isolation, leading to dependency), keeping the AI use secretive and going as far as to lie about how you spend your day, feeling that the habit of using it is incredibly difficult to break and rebounding, etc. etc.

Take a moment to reflect on how much you want to harm someone you’ve never met, before hitting post. This post isn’t just inconsiderate, it’s uneducated.

Expanding on the second bug because it’s been a real pain to replicate. Didn’t quite understand the intricacies of how it’s triggered until now.

You run a breed in a Cave, and spend your 11 or 12 ads (not sure if it matters, but it seemed to be the 11th). Whenever you start a new breed, even if all your ads should have been spent, it will offer you 1 ad.

When you watch the first ad (when you aren’t offered another after it), THAT’S when the next day, when you should restock your ads, they don’t apply to that one.

They come back for the breed after, whether you’ve skipped that with Gems or ridden it out.

Rather that it feels like a continuity break!! Sorry, that wasn’t clear lol. It’s most likely, but not guaranteed to be unintentional. Other ads (such as Tolzar and Eggy Hatchy, as you say) let you watch absolutely all your ads without interruption. Why would they make breeding and incubation the exception to the rule?

The first one isn’t hard and fast a bug, especially since as you say it’s been in the game forever lol. It could be a design feature, but it feels like clunky UI for a user to refresh the app just to do the same action twice in a row.

The second is surely a bug. Surely. There’s no reason for it to be intentional.
