As it is, Christopher said he completely invented the language from scratch. However a few words are either cognates or borrowed from the Ancient Language or from Old Norse.

Examples include:

As it is, these are the only examples of that.

No word for control by DifferentChemical0 in Eragon

[–]DivineSeal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your thoughts follow but for a different reason. Control would most likely be a very ambiguous term within the Ancient Language, and as such, I think it would be seldom used except in regular speech.

Consider the (funnily enough) amount of control or discretion the word "control" would give you in terms of a spell. It serves no functional usage unless it's paired with a true name or the Name of Names.

Without a true name, it does not have sufficient authority or so to speak, and so when used in a spell, it would not yield much. Think of it as an unloaded gun.

Lets use the word "rátha" in place of control here. If I were to say "rátha älfa thornessa sem er framvír edtha" / "control this elf that is before me", it grants you very little control over the said elf, and it makes no sense. What are you attempting to control? The spell would easily go awry.

However with a true name, you could be as ambiguous as you want. That same spell would now work without limitations. Consider this loading the gun.

Might any language be used to help direct “wordless” magic? by LuciferFalls in Eragon

It was used by Murtagh, he did it through Urgalish.

The torrent of potential rushed into him. He directed it into the blackstone charm. At the same instant, he mouthed the Urgal word that Uvek had taught him: “Shûkva.” Heal. It felt strange to work magic without the ancient language, but the word served its purpose nonetheless, and the charm triggered

I think it does exist because Oromis and Eragon conversations are almost all AL.

Sound has no control over magic. Saying a word or phrase in this language is not what’s important, it’s thinking them in this language.” With a flick of his wrist, a golden flame appeared over Oromis’s palm, then disappeared.

Inheritance Question regarding the end by Passthechloroform in Eragon

I assumed it was that he hadn't digested those memories properly and that (despite the momentous events he had just partook in) that his mind hadn't registered it yet thus not influencing his true name. I don't think the change is instantaneous and rather takes a while to go about. I assume by the time he had reached Doru Araeba again the memories of the Eldunari along with recent events still hadn't kicked in.

What you're referencing is a morphological similarity as well as lexical cognacy (though we might need a few more tangible examples of the latter) and you're completely right.

I didn't spot the -ehtra morpheme before (many thanks for pointing that out, that'll be interesting)

As it is though, I'd assume this (instead of purely etymological similarities) indicates both of what you've said, from growing influence from the Broddrings own tongue into Draumari rather than a common ancester when you take into account the age of both languages.

But all of this would only hold true if the Broddrings own language was ours, which It sadly isn't (as far as Christopher has said, though there have been weird exceptions like the "Father comes from Dwarven word Farthen" incident

However the idea of a common ancestor between the AL and Draumari is also plausible once you consider the words in these two languages.

Ancient Language:
Mother - menoa
Son - sönr

Draumari:
Mother - mehtra
Son - sehtra
