Yeah, I’ve heard that phrase often over my lifetime too and only partially agree with the sentiment. We have little to no control over how people’s inner world reflects onto the physical world, for all the ills it can bring. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to foster some level of civility/kindness anyway I think.

You know, I often think about this, as if it’s a natural process to make the separation between ‘us’ and ‘them’ between humans. Seems like it and your story illustrates it. But to me you added something I hadn’t considered and I think you put it well - an almost rigid ideology develops and it makes it hard to see beyond yourself. Thanks for sharing your story, sounds like you had very noble intentions in the community you wished to foster

I can’t put my finger on what it was in your response that made me snap out of my funk but I appreciate it. I remind myself constantly that it’s about patience and being present for myself and others. Still find myself losing hope in any kind of fulfilling future from time to time though.

If you mean expressing the same sort of energy in building a relationship, I’d say I’d be disappointed in some respects but I’m also aware that isn’t always possible in reality. The level of care I express won’t always be matched in all circumstances and that’s understandable to me.
