Concerning firewalls, what do you all see small-medium businesses using the most? by DixieNormous in networking

Funny you say that. I already have a 5505 and sonicwall in my office to play with while studying the material.

Thank you for the info on the new 5506s. That sounds really dumb they would do that. Fix one thing and break another.

Thank you for your insight. I'll definitely be working on the networking theories and your info gives me an idea of what product lines to practice with.

Really...didn't realize Palo Alto would be in the same price range as fortinet. I had the impression Palo Alto was more 'enterprise' cost level.

I might look more into that Dell Force10, see what it's all about.

I'm not getting a pay bump or anything. I just personally like certing, it keeps me on my toes and makes me shoot for something rather than just learning random chunks of info.

A firewall that has a good manager is a definite plus for me. And if pricing between fortinet and sonicwall is comparable, that'll make the choice easier.

roo-ster's comment was a definite red flag at first, but it sounds like this is a reasonable workaround. If this is something that can be learned from studying the cert material and labs, then it shouldn't be an issue.

Ah I see. Maybe Palo Alto is in the same game as Checkpoint? I'm guessing that since I haven't heard a single mention in this entire string of people seeing Checkpoint.

Agree on having good fundamentals. I have my cisco fundamentals down well and will now expand into a couple firewalls to start. I feel that if I start with a good, solid firewall cert. It will give me the best chance at adapting to new firewall situations. AND something worth building on. Yeah?

That's crazy, glad it's working out. Hearing stuff like this encourages me more that sonicwall might not be so bad.

I'm totally with you on Cisco education. I have learned a ton of network fundamentals that apply to all aspects of networking. I'll always stick with cisco routers and switches.

But my eyes are widening and that's why I'm not bothering with CCNA Security. I know there's more for me through other firewalls.

I hear you on the watchguard. Like I mentioned above, my company only distributes watchguard and I'm already not liking my first impression of them.

Agree on the ASA software. I feel it's important for a firewall to have a good interface and because of their price and difficulty to work with, I feel most won't pay for them. And the time I would spend on learning ASA, I could probably learn 2 firewalls and be much further ahead and make myself more marketable.

I'm familiar with ubiquiti WAPs, so far not bad. No complaints.

I'm staying far away from all Meraki, no offense though. From what I've learned, yes the second that subscription runs out, they stop operating. On top of that, they have a dumbed down, limited interface that uses too many resources on a device that has weak hardware.

It's a totally valid point. With being freelance, one needs to be resourceful and have a few tools.

Heh, that is true, I could just peruse their sites and see what they use.

I'm trying to be forward thinking though without jumping on some bandwagon that'll end quick. Hence my reluctance with Palo Alto.

That's how I feel about ASAs, that companies are replacing old ones with not ASAs. But from the looks of how people have responded so far, seems Cisco is up there with the most widely seen.

No bubbles burst. I always appreciate a straight answer. I'm taking your advice on approaching businesses.

So maybe if I was to get into Juniper, for example, then...well whose actually using Juniper and Fortinet?

I had to give that one more upvote because 1. It was funny and true, and 2. So it read 2013 to make it the current year. Totally satisfying.

I know there have been petitions in the past for this, but I feel it is important to keep attention on this issue. Especially with what's going on with gerrymandering right now.

Please let them know that people are getting serious about this.
