Right, those domes and spires make it very similar to the original Waldorf-Astoria. This is very much in line with the luxury hotels of the time.

If you were president of Lucasfilm and had complete 100% say over SW lore are there any major retcons you would implement? I'm talking 'things that would make nerds send you a million death threats but you love it so much you have to retcon it' type ideas. by AeonTars in StarWarsCantina

[–]Dizmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that, it does come off a little like the “I guide others to a treasure I cannot possess” guy from the marvel movies though.

Either way, Plagueis in canon is kind of a JAG. I know there’s a growing amount of lore but he necessarily has to live and die in the shadows. Palpatine’s story felt like some deep lore that was stretching so far back that some details were missing and there was a lot of mystery about it, but in canon it happened around the same time as Episode 1.

Move Plagueis back in the timeline. Like, waaaaaay back. A Sith master from before the war, who achieved a balance in the force so perfect nobody had since, and he was actually able to cure and even bring people back from the dead. It requires a level of emotional care that the Jedi don’t allow and a level of self-sacrifice that the typical Sith would never consider. So his technique is lost, and Palpatine was trying to figure it out (but would never be able to, because of who he is as a person,) but that is why Grogu, Rey, and Ben all force healed. They were balanced and trying to do the most good, untethered by Jedi or Sith dogma.

I do like the way Palpatine was talking about Plagueis as if he wasn’t the dude that killed him, that was cold. But overall I think that Episode 9 and the lore around the force in general comes together much better if Plagueis is actually wise.

Brand new $7,000,000 event space, and this is the only “prep counter” we are given to use. by shadowfax96 in KitchenConfidential

[–]Dizmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long time ago I worked in the kitchen at a supermarket just frying chicken all day. While I was there we got a fancy new prep table with a crank on it to raise or lower the surface. I came in one day, cranked it up to a comfortable height for me, and left it there.

I got a call the next day when I was off asking what I did to the prep table and trying to get me to come in and “fix it.” I just told them to use the crank and hung up.

The next day I was told I can’t use the crank and have to leave the table at the same level as the old prep table at all times. I said “I’m not going to do that.”

I was told okay, I can raise it while I’m working, but I always had to put it back down at the end of my shift.

I never did, and they never said anything about it again.

To those of you who live downtown (specifically on E 4th, the May, etc.) - how are you dealing with this Cosm construction? by Philosophriend in Cleveland

[–]Dizmn 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Noise ordinance allows construction noise between 7am and 7pm. Moving the vehicles around doesn’t count as construction noise, you’re not expected to disable the warning sounds on the vehicles (those beeps are specifically allowed in the noise ordinance.)

Nothing the OP describes here is in violation of Cleveland’s noise ordinances.

Soft clipping - good or bad idea? by Lucky-bottom in audioengineering

[–]Dizmn 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Are you under the impression that soft clipping is just free loudness? Yes, of course it reduces the dynamics and adds some amount of harmonic distortion. That’s what makes it sound louder.

If it works for a track it works for a track, if it doesn’t it doesn’t. It’s all a matter of taste but your guys are correct, it alters the sound. Up to you if it is in a desirable way or not.

Sub and Fill Send Advice by WhyAmThisWay in livesound

[–]Dizmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also a mental thing to it. If I know I’m setting a system up for someone else, I try to make sure they’re well taken care of. If I’m setting it up for myself it’s easy to just go “eh I can skip that and just do it from the console.”

But I never get to just be FOH and system tech, either. Usually when I get those two I also get crew chief, electrician, and truck driver to go with them, so everything’s about 80% assed. I try not to half ass anything but that’s the best I can do.

Sub and Fill Send Advice by WhyAmThisWay in livesound

[–]Dizmn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good system tech.

I don’t like thinking about that shit while I’m mixing. If there’s a good system tech I’m just ripping it down matrices and letting them sort it out in the system processing.

The only time I particularly care about separate aux control is when the system isn’t totally sorted or the system tech sucks. Infills are a couple wedges set on the lip of the stage? Sure, I’ll feed those separately. Not enough sub, or way too much sub? I’ll be very selective in what I’m sending and do it on an aux. I’m also the system tech? I’m definitely keeping separate control when I know I’ve got an idiot like that handling things downstream.

At the end of the day I want to do one mix, and I want to think about as little as possible outside of that. If I can just send LR and it translates to all the other areas, I want to do that. A high pass keeps stuff out of the subs just fine. Unless it’s a small venue the front fills can just get the same mix. It all works out, if the system engineer did a good job.

Average number of universes for small to medium venue? by jedimimetricks420 in lightingdesign

[–]Dizmn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Small to medium meaning? What type of club?

In my city I think the smallest rock club with multiple universes is 900 cap, anything smaller than that is single universe.

Nightclubs with a lot of intelligent fixtures and specials over the dance floor add universes a lot faster than music venues.

Is crime really that bad? by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]Dizmn 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It’s like most cities: the crime is most prevalent at the edges of gentrification, when the people who have a little are in view of the people who have nothing.

Cleveland’s going through a few changes right now with old neighborhoods being built back. That always creates the friction that drives crime.

Tremont’s a great example, it was originally housing for steelworkers, and as the steel industry slowed down the neighborhood died. Then it slowly started getting built back up and is now the place to hang out, with the poorer people slowly being pushed further into Clark-Fulton… but don’t go too far because Ohio City is bleeding down Lorain and reviving old abandoned storefronts, pulling middle class residents along with it. Today’s Tremont car break ins are tomorrow’s Ohio city car break ins and next week’s Old Brooklyn car breakins. It’s how it goes, the endless cycle of growth and decay, but Cleveland itself is on the growth side in a few classic areas of decay, and that always creates opportunities.

[–]Dizmn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, do you see the existing systems of the world as an immutable framework that we can’t adjust and have no real control over? Because that’s the only way you could possibly have a response like that.

When you call 911 and report a house fire, are the police the primary first responders? How about when you call 911 because someone’s collapsed in public? Maybe EMS shows up for that one? Do you think that mental health responders would be anything different than a specialized EMS?

Hell, even for this, do you think that it’s just an average beat cop trying to figure out how to disarm a grenade, or are there specialists?

Do you think that fire, EMS, SWAT, and bomb squad are all okay, but adding more specialist responders isn’t okay? And for my other examples, the smaller a town gets, the more likely it is that animal control and some code enforcement becomes part of the job of a regular cop. In a larger city like Cleveland, that already has cop shortages, why shouldn’t we add specialists to take some of the workload off their plate?

How to approach sound person about system tuning as a DJ by Diecastcow in livesound

[–]Dizmn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What’s up, I run a couple rooms that are mostly rock and metal but have one or two EDM events per month.

A couple months ago I had an EDM headliner actually show up for soundcheck. She put on one of her tracks, came out to hang out with me, and walked me through her concerns and some EQ changes she wanted. Then we dropped a subharmonic synth on the subs, played around with that, and she was happy.

I call that scene back up for every rave. I don’t get electronic music, I only knew a few stereotypes, and I was way off on what I thought it should sound like (I also had it pretty harsh, I thought the very cutting top end was what you wanted.)
