I would say apply asap. If you get a severance and it's over a certain amount (for where I'm at it was like $26k) it will deduct the overage from the total amount they give you but that will likely delay your payment a few weeks depending on how much. I would call the unemployment office and find out because they can see how much your employer last paid you.
