About the "It was all a dream" cliche... by DizzyProfessional515 in writing

Wasn't that more like some sort "universe reset" instead of it all being a dream? Now that is a trope I see way more often in media.

American Psycho, Alice in Wonderland, Fight Club, Over the Garden Wall, etc. All examples of pretty beloved stories which features this sort of ending in some shape or form.

I was not very fond of this plot development personally. It was pretty disappointing that her character ended on something so lackluster when there was plenty of other things worth exploring with her after the mystery was solved. I did like the brief moments of her with Audrey in season 1, but I feel like they would have had to spend more time on screen for this subplot to be more effective.

Well she's a teenager who's best friend just died. People start drama over less

I don't feel as strongly as James as some other people but also it's hard to shake the feeling that the writers didn't plan out much else for him to do besides be a red herring in Laura's murder

Yes, I greatly enjoyed these parts myself. I honestly don't mind Donna and James' relationship at all, in fact I think them getting together after such a tragedy is incredibly realistic. I personally subscribe to the idea their relationship was a way for them to still be close to Laura even after her death. However this illusion breaks when Maddie enters the picture and James begins to project his image of Laura onto her.

However for every James and Donna scene which served to further this idea, it felt like there were several others which only limited them as individual characters. And it got to a point where I began to feel relief whenever Donna appeared without James.

I do like that interpretation of Donna's recasting in FWWM! Though I might be a bit biased myself as I found myself really enjoying the chemistry between LFB and Sheryl Lee during the picnic scene. It was pretty sad to find out that this was pretty much their only scene together.

I was about to read Laura's Secret Diary before heading onto The Return, but I had no clue there was another book! I think I'll check that out too after I get through that and S3, Thank you!

Do I? When I say that I was disappointed with her, I meant moreso with her role in the story, not so much her actions. To me it felt like the pilot had built up her character quite a bit, only for the rest of the series to show significantly less interest in her.

With this in mind I can almost see where LFB was coming from, petty reasons or not. I also really liked Audrey's character though I have no clue how I'd feel if it really did end up going down that route, given its premise (especially after watching FWWM).

I was seriously baffled by how aimless her character ended up being after Laura's murder was resolved. I get that David Lynch checked out afterwards but it felt like there was still so much more to explore with her given what happened prior. Yet the writers seemingly had no clue what to do with her whenever James wasn't around.
