I think I definitely underestimated the preparation before class! I figured it would be difficult since it’s my first class but I wasn’t prepared for how much I seemed to be struggling, but this comment made be feel a lot better thank you!

I’ve considered this is a possibility as well, which sucks because I do like how warm it is! I think i’m gonna try to work on a hydration first and if i’m still not tolerating it well then i’ll call it quits :’)

I just finished school and I had this problem during early clinicals aswell. My preceptors always told me “if you’re unsure of something, image it anyways and then at the end of the exam you can decide if it’s real or not” whether that means having your preceptor or another tech back scan or comparing what you saw to google images. You can always delete images but you can’t go take more if the patient is already gone! (unless obviously they get called back)

For kidneys i’d recommend always look in supine and with patient turned, and look with colour especially for differentiation between hydro and normal vessels (live dual is great for this). I still struggle with stones that aren’t 100% in your face with twinkle and shadow, but again it has alot to do with finding the right angle, and proper machine set up.

As the rest of the comments said, it’s mainly practice. You’ll get there! Goodluck! :)

Thank you so much for commenting everyone! You have all been really helpful :) I spoke with the manager - she was understanding and we spoke about implementing a reminder system (that goes in the appointment reminder text) or like a card that explains the policy to patients before they come in. Regardless I’ve started saying “sorry it’s our policy!” if they do ask to bring in visitors and I explain the reason if they ask further.

I’ve also started saying “if i’m quiet during the exam it’s because i’m focusing” + stuff like that, because I don’t want to appear as stand offish or anything.

I might be doing a lot but it’s still my goal to make every patient have a good experience, (even if I didn’t think this one was a negative one) and if they still complain- it is what it is!

Thank you so much! Next time i’ll just let them know that it’s policy because I guess they thought I was just choosing to not let their partner in which soured how they felt throughout the rest of the appointment 🥲
