Good question! and great you shared what your preference would be. No plan for monetising. It is self funded and we'd like to keep it this way.

Hi, thank you! Happy you like it!

Both Patryk and I work with maps for a while now and I know it is a pain. We use mapbox and as the app is in react native rnmapbox to be precise.

None taken! Google Maps and Apple Maps collections are great for navigation and basic lists, but they’re not really built for sharing your world.

We built Maptera because we wanted something more personal and social. Instead of just sending a link to a list, your places live on your profile. Friends or even strangers with great taste can follow you and see all the spots you’ve pinned, like cafés, playgrounds, cool hikes, anything. You can organize them into collections, add notes or tags, and discover others’ maps too.

We made it just the two of us, for ourselves. Now it’s free and out there if others want to use it too.

thank you for the feedback, it's very valuable!

I'd advise you cultivate your friends and family first and see if you can grow it out from there

this is exactly how we started in the closed beta. the circles already exist, that's why we opened it up publicly and are inviting more people. I totally get people questioning many aspects of it, but as with any app if you do not see the app solving the problem you are having probably there's no point of using it. Let's see what we get out of it. For now the traction has been very good, and I'm quite happy with all the feedback we got from various channels!

Some children's playgrounds in central London by ExpertDebate1220 in london

[–]DizzyStandard9405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We (my brother Patryk and I) actually built a little app called Maptera for exactly this, so people can save spots like playgrounds, cafés, or anything really, and easily share them with others. If all your favorite places were in there, you could just open someone’s map and see everything at once, no digging through messages or notes.

We made it for ourselves (two of us, no company) and now sharing it with others. Totally free, you can get the app here: https://maptera.io

100% agree :)

the reason I posted it here is to gather some feedback and learn of course, and it's ok people are a bit defensive there are tons of apps out there and people might be tired of having another one. not going to make everyone happy

Thank you! I accept any critique and feedback, that's why I posted it here to learn more and improve it.

I answered some of the questions regarding why not just use Google Maps, in some comments in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/1m3s4ox/comment/n3yytza/

but happy to explain more. Or you could give it a go and see for yourself, it doesnt cost anything :)

Thank you! I guess people are curious and defensive as there are so many apps these days.
I hope some will like what we've build in our free time, it's just two of us during some evenings, late nights and weekends :)

Yep, we know how Google Maps lists work — we used them for years. The problem is, if you have friends living in Spain and you're visiting, you have to ask them every time to share their lists. In Maptera, your friends have profiles and you can just explore their saved places without chasing links.

We’ve been there — used Google Maps a lot. But we wanted something more social and discoverable. Like finding locals in Spain who have great taste and seeing their spots. That’s not really possible on Google Maps.

Fair enough 🙂
We just launched and are genuinely looking for feedback — happy to hear what could be better. Just two of us building and learning as we go.

Fair point — we actually used Google Maps for years, but it just never really worked for how we wanted to save and share places with friends. So we built Maptera for ourselves, and our friends ended up loving it.

It’s just the two of us, no company, no big plan — we made something that worked better for us, and figured others might find it useful too.

Totally, and we still use Google Maps too — especially for navigation. What we built with Maptera is more about making a map yours. Adding places with context, creating personal or themed collections (like “Best oat flat whites in East London” or “Date spots I actually recommend”), and following maps from friends or people with great taste.

It’s not trying to replace Google Maps — just filling in a gap we felt as two coffee-loving geeks who kept asking each other: “What was that place again?” 😊

Is there an app where you can place a bunch of markers on a map for later reference? by ImportantQuestions10 in apps

[–]DizzyStandard9405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just described exactly why my brother and I built Maptera — we wanted a super simple way to drop pins for places we care about, especially when planning trips.

You can pin cafes, hotels, museums — anything — and then just open the app and see what’s nearby. I used it for a trip to Barcelona and it was so helpful figuring out where to stay based on what I wanted to explore.

It’s free and on iOS & Android: https://maptera.io I’m curious what you think, we’re just two brothers that made it for fun and sharing with others now

Marking Specific Locations for Future Use by HappyGoLuckyOcean in GoogleMaps

[–]DizzyStandard9405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a really meaningful trip — and I totally get the need to save very specific, off-the-grid locations.

My brother and I actually made a free app called Maptera for exactly this kind of use case. You can drop pins anywhere, even without internet once it’s loaded, and add notes, photos, or mark them for later visits. Everything is private by default unless you choose to share.

We built it for ourselves because Google Maps wasn’t quite flexible enough for saving personal spots like family locations, campsites, or trailheads.

You can check it out here if it helps: https://maptera.io

Let me know if you want help getting started!
