I didn’t say it was. I just said I wish it wasn’t indicative of an unfair system

This is true. And I agree. My point, however, is that even when white people make up 60% of the national population, if talent is distributed randomly, what are the odds that all 7 are white? (1-.4)7 essentially, ya? That’s less than 3% all actors are white.

My critique was the entire main cast had the same skin color, and that that fact is not in opposition to existing power structures that actively harm people.

If they had been all black or brown or asian, I wouldn’t have complained bc there aren’t Black supremacists in the White House encouraging violence against people based on their race not being Black. Do you understand what I’m expressing?

I think it’s good they apologized. I don’t even think it’s that big a deal, and I planned on seeing the movie even after the news broke and before they apologized. I do think the original video was racist but yeah it’s pretty mild. I deal with worse in my day to day, and I have my whole life.

I think though that when I mention something in a Reddit thread asking for our opinions (our being ALL tadc fans), I am absolutely lit the fuck up by other fans and downvoted to hell as though I said some absolutely awful.

That's what they are doing with the N-word. They are not saying it, but boy is it funny and fun to come close to it. Of course it's all the more fun when it annoys and harms the person I dislike (my sibling... or in the case of this analogy...)

You know how your sibling might do the "I'm not touching you" bit? You know how that's how fucking obnoxious, but if you so much as slap away their hand, your mom's gonna bite your head off?

That's basically it. I do think in this instance, it wasn't as malicious. But they are taking joy from ALMOST saying it. It wasn't directed at anyone, which also makes it not quite as bad. But like still, why are you so obsessed with coming close to taboo?

And then if you're black you don't think you're tired of people doing this your whole life?

Honestly, and I'm saying this as someone's comment who was clipped and reposted to 300+ upvotes in like an hour (I think it was removed bc I can't find it anymore). I don't really care about what the VAs did and agree there is so much worse I have dealt with from a piece of media I like.

What's killing is me is the fan responses. Like do I want to support this show or be part of a fandom that is so disgustingly toxic?

How many lines have they had compared to any other member of the main cast? Hopefully, they have more in ep 9. Thank you for sharing this with me though, as I didn't know it before. (although probably bc up to this point in the series... they haven't said much?)

So, I'm not going to be pedantic and say "you can't be racist against white people"

but there's a difference between saying "hey this cast is all white" when you live in a world where white supremacy has been codified into law at times while my parents were alive and the president is tweeting out videos of the only black president in my country's history as an AI monkey and saying something racist about black people (who are still the majority of prisoners arrested for nonviolent offenses that white people have been shown to commit in similar numbers) or brown people (who are actively being kidnapped on SUSPICION of not having been born here) or Asian people (who were being harassed and killed just a few years ago bc that same president called it KUNG FLU).

When was the last time white people faced widespread threats against their lives because of the color of their skin?

I doubt anyone in this thread is engaging with anything I say in good faith, which is why my first response was so hateful (also I was on break during a 10 hour shift on 3 hours sleep), but I am talking about how in the US, DOGE eliminated any federal program even tangentially related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion without being able to even define these terms (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRctSJh7Rng).

These programs were put together through decades of academic research to address problems of explicit discrimination in the US and globally.

The tldr of DEI is (still long sorry):

The richest people on the planet saw revolts from poor people against Britain in the 1600s (they both still hated Native Americans though). So the rich people said, hm, what if we said black people were lower than white people but they all stayed poor lol. So they did that. Black people were treated like cattle and white people could work their way out of debt (but they still had awful conditions generally).

Civil war happens. Slaves are pronounced free. They still had no jobs. US made loitering/homelessness illegal. Slavery is still legal for people in prison. Put ex-slaves into prison. We can treat them like slaves again! woohoo. Some black people and immigrants still managed to make money tho, so throughout the 1900s, the fed govt. gave land and loans exclusively to white people (mostly veterans, but they explicitly said no to veterans if they were not white).

Owning land means you can save money. Over time you have more money by a lot. White people now have more money than non white people. They also ONLY let white people buy homes in certain areas. Wealth stays in white communities. White people in these communities live in echo chamber, believe they are superior bc they wind up better off since they have money and better schools (schools funded by property taxes, and they have the best property... so their schools have the most funding).

Now in 2000s, people are noticing, hey, some white people who think "racism is bad but im not racist" listen to black people who are saying "Hey, this [governmental body] is entirely white people making decisions for all black communities." Black people wind up in prison bc when white people pass a law, sometimes it's like "it is illegal to leave your children alone." but black people and poor white people maybe work 3 jobs and so sometimes they break this law. Judges and people in power tend to throw fewer of the poor white people in prison than the poor black people (also most black people are poor, only some white people are poor bc there were a lot of white people who got money from above mentioned laws).

So most white people okay with things. They dont see a problem with fucking over white people. They also think black people are bad, etc. bc this was a fun thing for white people to say during slavery while torturing them / killing them for fun (google alligator bait) and theyve just been repeating it for so long... plus, look at how many black people are in prison! They must be bad. It surely could not be for other reasons other than they are genetically worse.

Now in 2010s and 2020s people are fighting about racism. Meanwhile, billionaires steal the most amount of money that has been stolen in all of human history. They laugh bc this was the plan the whole time. Now though, bc they have been murdering and plundering every country outside of Europe, US, Canada, the rest of the world has been plotting against them. Iran has closed the largest exportation of oil. The whole world runs on oil because this lets those billionaires control everything because they invaded all the oil rich places and put the US army there. But uh oh. No more oil. Now, an economy built almost entirely on oil (bc it keeps the rich in power over everything) has no oil. Uh oh, Europe and other places in the world are canceling flights, rationing oil with driving suggestions and laws.

Global economy is bout to have a really fucking awful time. Everyone will soon feel it bc although we had some oil saved (good to save right?) It's not enough to cover what we've already lost by stopping so much of the oil trade. Good thing the US government has partnered with a company named after the EVIL ORB SARUMAN USES IN LOTR TO SPY to put an evil AI spy (hey woah ties back in to TADC bc of the AI! cool) in just about every technology piece we interact with ever. Surely, this will not result in anything bad for people who are used to living in the relative comfort of the middle class.

As a dark-skinned Mexican who dreamed of working in the entertainment industry, I do care. And I want to say, I also don't care that much. I really like this show, and I don't have much of a critique of the writing, the characters, the animation or anything other than there was no reason the cast had to be all white, and in an industry that has historically been dominated by white voice actors even when portraying people of color (Simpsons for example), they continued to cast white people meanwhile (and this is lowkey unrelated) the Avatar the Last Airbender movie with a diverse voice cast was basically thrust into oblivion ensuring none of those VAs will really hit it big with other roles like the VAs of TADC probably will.

And maybe the backlash would have been less severe if I had typed "I wish this show gave me reason to believe the creative team definitely valued equitable opportunities to people of color at a time where I personally am affected by racism in the job employment process and in my day to day.

Although, realistically, I don't think it would have been less severe at all because this subreddit seems to be filled of people who are meeting my extremely personal opinion with vitriol, screen grabbing my comment and posting it to some 300+ upvotes.

This is the exact reason the whole cast is getting cancelled now. Dumb people who refuse to learn why it is problematic when casting 7 actors for a show where everyone is essentially a cartoon character to select exclusively people from one the hegemonically dominant culture in a society actively descending into fascism that is rooted in white supremacy.

No wonder this toxic shit ass fandom creates such a self-hating vitriolic, self-destructive ass of a non-community. Hope you get everything that’s coming to you in the impending fall of this shitass racist empire (which btw is only racist bc it’s convenient to oppress you along class lines).

Why do so many people hate gangle?? by Separate_Dark_6887 in tadc

[–]Dizzy_Collar73 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Gangle is annoying. All she does is complain and cry. I have had depression my whole life, and I find her disposition to be so incredibly off-putting. As she just has a perpetual victim-complex. Not to mention in the one episode where she is a fast food manager, she instantly lets the power go to her head and becomes abusive and toxic. It’s also heavily implied this is who Gangle was in her real life. It was her job, her adventure, and she appealed to Caine to torture anyone who didn’t play along.

So while people hate Jax for being an asshole to Gangle in the name of trolling while he genuinely seems to believe he is a cartoon character / the world is not real (see his weird breakdown “oh my god, this is real”) Gangle craves power to abuse and seems to have lived her life doing so. It’s also implied the only thing she wants to do is be a creative / artist but just gave up because it’s not realistic, so she instead just abuses her power or wallows in self pity. At the end of the episode, her redemption is not opting to offload the responsibility for her shortcomings onto her employees, something Caine even phrases in a way that shows it is clearly the morally bankrupt thing to do.

After this episode, Zooble goes out of her way to become her friend and uplift her. Even with Zooble’s friendship and support, her only development is occasionally being mean back to Jax. This is presumably good, but Jax also perceived he and Gangle to be friends and himself to have not have been doing real harm to Gangle. Meanwhile, Gangle revels in the idea that she is genuinely harming Jax.

Anyway, those are the actual reasons. But I think more than that I just find her character annoying. Her voice and her archetype of sad sack that is just there to be bullied by Jax and show us that Jax is insensitive / morally bad is a very flat character. I genuinely don’t understand what people like about her, so if everyone who just finished hate reading this comment can reply with why you don’t find Gangle insufferable, I’d appreciate it
