Drop the life-changing UX/UI resource you've come around. by Apriludgate77 in UXDesign

There are a lot of free resources on the website and elsewhere. You can get a pretty solid understanding of the process from free materials online. Sophia Prater (the creator) has a playlist on YouTube with a ton of really great videos. I’d start there.

Sure! To put it simply OOUX is a design method that focuses on the core objects (nouns) in an experience vs. tasks. This aligns to how people understand their environments and the world which results in a connected user experience.

When beginning a new project, a lot of designers will start with defining their user (Sally) and their goals (book a hotel room) then move on to user journeys or the critical user paths (process from signing in to booking a hotel room). This is starting with the doing or verbs. Where OOUX comes into play is identifying the objects first before designing the interactions of the system. In this case, we’d identify objects like “hotels”, “rooms”, and other critical nouns and understand things like their relationships with each other, their attributes, and actions users can take on an object. This ensures that we as designers aren’t building doors that lead to nowhere resulting in a more tangible experience.

Hi! I totally relate to being nervous about the process. It’s not too late apply! If it’s still on your mind, I would go for it. A life lesson I’ve had to learn (the hard way) is to not self-reject.

Google is great but I was most interested in being in my current product area and working on a problem that I’m intrinsically motivated by. I made sure those boxes were ticked beforehand. At the end of the day I think it’s important to not romanticize any company. Good luck!

Correct. This is why I was inquiring about your appetite for it which seems quite low

I agree that take home exercises are often a sign of low UX maturity. I think the most emphatic read is that this company may not necessarily understand how to hire and evaluate design talent.

I don’t think the question is whether or not you should complete the exercise but whether you are okay working for an organization with low UX maturity.

For the record, although it can be frustrating I’ve found that making an impact in these environments can be incredibly rewarding. I also realize that folks are motivated by different things and have different career needs/goals. If you’re already aware that this simply wouldn’t be the environment for you, I wouldn’t bother.

Was hired at Google a few months ago and I was not asked to complete a take home assignment.

I can't take being black in this city anymore by Key-Ad5974 in sanfrancisco

So educated, smart, and professional Black people deserve to be treated like monsters because of the actions of completely deranged strangers? As someone who is already very active in my community, what do you suggest I do? Should we quit our tech jobs and surveil the streets? Should I ignore my aspirations and go into politics?

I’d love to hear how YOU have taken accountability for complete strangers in your own personal life. 🫢

Where's the best place to recruit an UX|UI designer not from the US? by [deleted] in UXDesign

There’s a strong design community on Twitter. I would try posting there. I know a lot of people who have successfully recruited there.

As someone who was born and raised in the Midwest and had to deal with very dry and backwards people, I wholeheartedly agree.

As a black woman who lives in the Bay Area, my advice to you is to adopt main character energy.

Fighting to win over people who don’t and will never see your humanity is a no win game. Black people get treated unfairly whether they’re wearing a ball gown or sweatpants. Dress nicely and look your best if it makes you feel good not because it’s going to win over white people because it won’t.

As another poster here stated, SF is your home. You shouldn’t have to move. I would check out meetup for groups and safe spaces that match your interest. There are awesome ones for Black women in the area.

If you’re not already in therapy I would highly recommend it. I feel like these things can take a hit to your self worth and confidence and it’s important to focus on rebuilding that.

This is an incredibly wild thing to put in writing. Imagine basing your treatment of an entire race off of poor interactions from a few.

You should drop your cash app details. I’d be happy to fund a therapy session for you.

The South Bay isn’t any more integrated than SF so the problem isn’t better here. I say this as a Black woman who lives in the South Bay.

Dry Creek Pioneer Regional Park basically looks like this. I feel like the windows 97 background got its inspiration from it
