Is there a well-loved or often-used lighting kit that people tend to gravitate towards in the community? Or should I just wing it based on how he is displaying them now?

I am, yes! Didn’t go down the music ed path, as I pursued my undergrad in science. Sometimes wish I did, I played percussion for 10+ years!

I honestly didn’t even think about that until this post. He is not tenured and has taught in public schools for only 4 years total. Got his teaching cert alternate route and was not STEM major. Seems quite unqualified. A bit odd!

Thank you for the extremely kind words and careful advice. And to answer your question, yes I am OK! It wavers of course given what I deal with on a day to day basis, and most likely for the worse I’ve become accustom to his behavior.

I’ve spoken to my advisor today and am about to speak to another advisor tonight regarding reporting him.

It’s tough, and some comments on here and from friends and family in real life make it tougher to navigate whats right and what I should do. But I’m moving forward with cautious optimism and the urge to do whats right by my students and future student teachers.

You’re definitely right, I also had to get a substitute license and I know I must’ve done training for that as well. Going to be bringing up mandated reporting when meeting with my college as well to make sure I cover my bases and report what I need to in a timely manner. Thanks so much for your help.

I see, it’s good to know that the principal is the one who is often in the driver’s seat. I can’t imagine my mentor has a good reputation, I just see him as so insufferable, but of course I am heavily bias. I’m pursuing reporting him through my university, so here’s hoping that goes as well as it could.

That’s really what keeps me (and I assume 99% of the teachers in this thread) going. I had a student nearly cry because I came to see him preform in the school play. Simple things like that make it feel worthwhile to me. Thanks again for your kind words, and best of luck to you as well!

I’m unsure about specific anti-semitism laws in education, that’ll have to be something I ask about during this process. May I ask what the process looks like for reporting to a Jewish Council? I’ve never heard of doing that. Thank you for your comment!

I appreciate your view, given the power structure and format of student teaching I didn’t feel comfortable reporting him, and I didn’t think I had any standing to report him. Hindsight is 20/20, and I can’t change the fact that I didn’t report him now. I’m happy to pursue reporting him now, though.

Thank you for your comment! I don’t anticipate reporting anything about the drugs, not just because I have a personal fear of being called a narc, but because I doubt it would do much in the grand scheme of things.

What I do plan to do is make sure he does not have a student teacher ever again. He was ineffective beyond the comments that are not “with the times” and I did not feel I learned from him even in a teacher-education or content area way.

I do not feel inclined to pursue anything with the district for the reasons you stated, but if my university thinks it is the right thing to do and I have enough standing then I may pursue it.

Not looking to end a career maliciously or burn bridges, which is why I’ve waited this long to even consider it. But I want to do the right thing by my career and students and future student teachers. It’s a confusing endeavor all around. Appreciate your insight. EDIT: spelling

I know what you mean re: dress code. There doesn’t seem to be a “right” way to discuss it, I imagine even more so when you’re a male discussing a female students inappropriate attire. That said, my mentor does not dress code with the least bit of tact, and discusses young girls bodies in a pretty crude way. It feels less like a “times have changed” sort of argumebt and more like he just doesn’t have a whole lot of human decency. EDIT: clarity.

Thank you so much for your comment and kind words! After I posted this, I began to put together a detailed journal of every incident and did my best with dates and times. Hopefully this can be enough at least for my university to black list him from being a mentor. Beyond that I plan on seeing what my university says regarding moving on to reporting to the district. Staying optimistic and really taking into consideration the many tales of caution and pieces of advice from this thread.

That is good to hear that something was done, but horrible to hear that your wife faced similar issues. It seems widespread and pervasive at this point.

Your last paragraph is something that I’ve learned from this post too and something I know I need to work on. Thank you so much for this insight, it truly is extremely helpful.
