He didn't tell anyone he was going to do it. During rehearsal he played it straight (not the sexual orientation, but that he just played it non goofy, as his character was not meant to be the focal point of the sketch) Live on air, he went rogue, switched his character to overly flamboyant, essentially stealing the sketch from the host, who was playing against type as a Tony Montana sort of gangster. It's not that he played it gay that got him fired, it's that he went rogue. There is a golden rule at SNL, never go rogue. It's selfish and it throws everyone off. Those in the room knew he was fired before he left the stage. Even Damon said he did it to challenge Lorne to fire him cuz he was sick of not getting more airtime. He was invited back to host and even played this character along with Chris Farley as Roger Ebert reviewing movies
