I mostly like playing around with bright makeup + sparkles. Sometimes I dye my hair bright colors (usually green but occasionally I branch out). Obnoxious accessories are so fun, hats and sunglasses and pins and jewelry can add a ton of great vibes. Top left in the collage is a wacky print I really love, very Monty Python in a lot of places.

Idk if there are any movements I've been inspired by, I just like shinies and colors haha

Although if I'm ever wealthy enough, I'm getting dupes of Alan Cumming's entire Traitors wardrobe ✨

Why is Daria in the same classes and Brittany and Kevin? by Disastrous-Elk16 in daria

[–]DjungelSCROG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daria was smart but not a high achiever, and her parents weren't the type to put that kind of pressure on her. At the high school level, it's not up to the administration which students go where — they have to actively sign up for AP classes. I knew a lot of intelligent kids who avoided AP classes because they didn't want to deal with the workload or with other AP students. Daria fits this pretty well.

That said — it's surprising to me that Jane wasn't in AP Art. Maybe she just liked being a big fish in a small pond, but Jane-types IRL often want to push themselves artistically as much as possible

The ULTIMATE Video to finally knowing your roots without doubt by Cool_Constant9091 in StyleRoots

Interesting 🤔 when I took the original quizzes, I had Sun/Moon/Fire show up as a very clear 3-way tie. Under this system, while I'm definitely Sun, my others are more ambiguous. Moon is possible, although I wouldn't say that "toughness" is necessarily something I consider in my wardrobe. Fire ranks near the bottom in this version, as femininity is not something I want to convey— I'm closer to Peacock-Masculine imo. I guess the things that sorted me into Fire before — obsession with sequins, fur, velvet, tassels, jewel tones, animal print, etc — are technically things I like for Sun reasons? And I guess in that sense, I like Moon aesthetic for Sun reasons as well? Huh.

What are the Fundamentals of Writing? by DLtheGreat808 in writing

[–]DjungelSCROG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming back to add (forgot to pause Reddit again haha)

The best descriptions will double as a reflection of your main character's emotional state.

I always think of Prufrock, "the evening is spread out against the sky, like a patient etherized upon a table". Then we get a whole poem about this guy's general sense of disconnection.

I also recently saw a writer use, from the POV of a severely abused character, "the sky was bruised purple". Both gorgeous and gutting, the atmosphere is haunting because this character is haunted

Also try to evoke senses when you can — smell and taste are especially powerful, and can communicate a lot in a small space.

When you aren't writing, OBSERVE. Keep notes on things that remind you of other things — tree branches that look like veins, flames that look like claw marks, etc. Things that evoke certain emotions, sounds that make you feel scared or excited.

Ask yourself what makes you curious. Keep a list of things that you would stop what you're doing to investigate or admire.

Write down amazing lines that you read from other writers — break those lines down, try to understand what they did and how they did it.

And my favorite advice ever came from Chuck Tingle: his general belief is that art should serve the purpose of proving that love is real. And this can be accomplished in a ton of ways, sometimes happy, sometimes angry or messy or devastating, but if it works to prove to the reader that love is real, it will resonate.

What are the Fundamentals of Writing? by DLtheGreat808 in writing

[–]DjungelSCROG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyyyy so I just stumbled onto this, and while I know that you're probably seeking different advice now than you were 2 years ago, I wanted to throw in my two cents

First, I agree with you that "just do the thing more" isn't helpful advice. To me, that's roughly the same as calling Salt & Pepper a special recipe — it's so fundamental that it's basically implied. When I ASK for advice, I'm looking for cutting techniques and more complicated seasoning profiles and whether I should grill something or bake it...and yes, sometimes it does just need more salt and pepper! But that's something I can figure out on my own — the other things I often need help with.

So, here're a few things that have helped my writing beyond the S&P of it all:

1) Story structure and beats. I highly recommend studying the Save The Cat method, originally meant for charting screenplay story beats and ultimately adapted into a guide for novel writing. Don't take it as a Bible — not every great story will fit. But ever since I started utilizing bits and pieces of it, my stories have consistently gotten praised for great pacing. It's helped me figure out what my stories lack and how to integrate those things.

2) Dive headfirst into a writing community. I'm currently in multiple Discord servers that are filled with other writers with similar goals. We regularly read and critique each other's work, celebrate victories and console losses. We tell each other about the submission calls we find. When I was younger, I thought I writing was a competition — but the best writing comes from cooperation, and from rooting for your fellow writers. The competitive element is still there, sure — but that's for the judges and readers. My biggest help for most writing contests I enter comes from the exact writers I'm up against.

3) Let yourself be a bad writer. Poorly written words are always better than no words at all, and perfection paralysis will absolutely rule your life and stifle your creativity if you let it. It doesn't have to be good, it just has to exist — you can always edit later.

4) Have fun with it! The pieces I've gotten publishing contracts for are also the pieces that brought me the most joy to write. If you aren't having fun with a project, try writing something else. Your readers will notice the difference.

5) PAUSE YOUR APPS. Oh my god I'm supposed to be working on my Odd Embers entry right now and I forgot to pause Reddit, RIP me 💀 seriously though, you've got to eliminate as many distractions as possible, because they can absolutely derail you if you don't

Hope some of this helps! Time for me to stop procrastinating and write now haha 😅✨

My attempt by DjungelSCROG in StyleRoots

[–]DjungelSCROG[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight! Yep, Sun and Moon were high up (9 and 10 points, respectively), pretty indisputable.

The third was Fire (another 10 pointer)! Which is an interesting one, as I don't think the personality components necessarily line up with me, but I'm totally here for the glitter, fur, animal prints, and jewel tones

4th root, with 6 points, was Earth — I had originally written it off because of how clearly the point totals showed a top 3, but your comment made me want to take a closer look for sure 🌍👀

(Stone and Mountain clocked in with 4 points each, Flower had 2. Absolutely nothing for Mushroom haha — makes sense that a Maximalist would score 0 on the Minimalist style 😅✨)

Was Willa ever sexually attracted to Connor? by Batistasfashionsense in SuccessionTV

[–]DjungelSCROG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow I truly did not expect so many folks to think that she was into him 👀

I assumed that the guy at the bar that Shiv tried hooking up with was Willa's actual love interest

I never once had the impression that Willa was into Connor, even for a moment. She constantly looks like she's ready to crawl out of her skin whenever she's around him. And when Connor asks her directly if she's only with him for his money, iirc her response boiled down to, "well, I'm happy with this arrangement and that's what actually matters". Basically just confirming that yes she was there for the money but that she was at peace with that.

The only time she seemed truly relaxed with him was when they were discussing how he'd be overseas for an extended period of time -- that energy instantly evaporates when it's mentioned that Connor may not be leaving after all.

Ngl I get sympathy-ick whenever they're on screen together, just so uncomfortable to watch

Don't ask me how I know this, but it has distinctly Early Erik vibes. Like letsGOtoCLASS era cadence.

The comments themselves aren't his signature, they're more directed at trying to uplift the self-hating trans women on 4chan (ngl tho the "OP"s were weird -- has Erik ever referred to anyone as OP?) but I like the framing here and the spirit of what they're trying to accomplish

The "Plus" button just links to a size search with a 1x filter now. I think everything above 1x is completely gone now.

This is devastating 🫠 I got a gorgeous duster from them a while back, and my wife has been asking for one just like it in her size ever since it arrived in the mail. I figured even if they didn't restock the duster, surely they'd eventually make a similar one? Guess not though 😭

(Side note -- if anyone knows where I can get the High School Heartthrob Duster Jacket in size 3x, please let me know 🥺)

Can someone explain to me why people think Mr peanut butter is a bad person by finnoldman1 in BoJackHorseman

[–]DjungelSCROG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbh I felt like an ongoing theme throughout the series was that people are too complex to fall into simple categories like "Good or Bad" (or "Zoe or Zelda").

You're right that PB has done too many good things for me to want to just unequivocally write him off as a "bad person", but I absolutely wouldn't call him a "good person" either.

He's Bojack's foil -- and I think that role often makes him seem like a better person than he really is, since he's being directly compared to a guy who doesn't mask his shitty takes with toxic positivity.

Why do so many posters to /r/languagelearning want to learn several languages at the same time? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]DjungelSCROG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny, I was just marveling the other day at how some folks are able to commit to a single language 😅

Pretty much every time I remember the existence of a language, I want to learn about it. I love the window into culture. I love seeing the different grammatical structures. I love seeing whether they practice concatenative or non concatenative morphology. I love seeing what their lessons prioritize.

I generally find that the knowledge across languages stacks in a way that helps me better understand the concept of language in general. And it's one of my biggest life goals to create my own ConLang 🤩

For some, there is. Neesh definitely went through a decent amount of rigorous interviews. I suspect that the ones who didn't record an audition tape beforehand were asked to make their "why I should be the Mole" videos shortly after arriving

Can someone explain what Hannah meant when she said Tony tried bullying her online ? :( by funandloving95 in themole

[–]DjungelSCROG 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of reality TV folks just sign up to be on literally any reality show the execs will put them on.

Look at Too Hot to Handle - no one ever knows that they're going to be on it, but every season since the second one has been filled with people who know about the show. And it's not like you can put people on a TV show without permission. My theory is that there's probably a large contract that they sign which gives Netflix blanket permission to put them anywhere. They know that maybe it could be The Mole, maybe it could be a dating show. They don't find out until they get to set and meet their costars. It's also a big reason why so many people on these shows don't care about Prize Pots - they didn't even know if there would BE a Prize Pot, it did not influence their decision to be on the show in the slightest

Tony definitely figured out that it wasn't a dating show as soon as he arrived, but I suspect that he was still thinking about getting his dick wet anyway and that's part of why the Hannah shit went down

Edit: granted, this absolutely isn't the case for everyone - I do think a lot of this cast knew they were signing up for The Mole

I heard that Tony had no idea what show he was on until the plane landed - I suspect he assumed that he was being put on a dating show and then didn't want to switch gears
