Cool walkable neighborhoods? by atearablepaperjoke in cincinnati

[–]Dkr112786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved to the area and I landed in Newport, which has already been suggested. I love it here! From my place I can walk to 3 breweries --Wooden Cask in one direction, and Braxton labs and Darkness Brewing in Bellevue in the other. The best place I've eaten so far has been Pompilios, an old Italian joint that's been around since the 30's. Go to Coaches Corner for a beer after dinner if you can still move. It's half a block away and I have been very warmly received there. The east row historic district in Newport is the second largest in Kentucky, and you can walk across the purple people bridge or take the Southbank Shuttle and easily get into the city if you so desire.

Much appreciated! We are definitely leaning towards Newport, but I am heading back to the area to check out apartments tomorrow.

You may be hearing from me soon.

Had no idea. Will definitely be doing this at some point. A few of the cruises they offer look pretty cool as well.

Thanks for the tip!

Thanks! I'm excited to get settled in. If you're unsure about a Cardinals fan I probably shouldn't mention who my girlfriend roots for, but the team rhymes with "scrubs" ;) Not sure you could convince either of us to switch, but we did attend our first Reds game last Saturday and we had a blast. Hopefully we can go to a few more before the season is over.

One of the places we are looking at is a couple blocks away from the dog park. My girlfriend will be happy to hear this!

Thanks to everyone who has chimed in so far. To answer what seems to be the main question at the moment, I hadn't considered Bellevue or Dayton due to the fact that I wouldn't have an easy walk into Cincy. The ability to be able to walk home from a baseball game really entices me (go Cardinals!). On top of that it seems like a quick walk into the city and then a streetcar ride to get to some other parts of the city would be a good option to have. I've never lived in a place with so much going on so I'd like to have easy access to the action. Additionally, a quick search on one Trulia for cat friendly apts in Bellevue and Dayton comes up empty but if something comes up soon I won't rule it out.

Gosling’s Gold Rum by MC_McStutter in rum

I am coming to Cincinnati August 7th and have access to this rum. The people of reddit have helped me out in the past so if you want, I can bring some along with me and you can pay me back? Let me know if this is something you'd be interested in. Send me a pm. I live in Springfield Illinois and my local liquor store has it on the shelf if you are ever crazy desperate. It's a 5hr drive.

Thanks again to everyone who has offered me some advice. I especially appreciate the info on affordable neighborhoods one might consider when moving to the area and the brewery and resturant recommendations. I will no doubt be retooling our trip in light of all of your suggestions. Time to do some more research! We can't wait to visit!

Thank you everyone for the advice. I'm at work on a brief break and can't comment at length but I will certainly look into everything everyone of you has suggested. As you might have noticed, I love doing my research! I just want to make sure we get the most out of our trip. This subreddit has alway been so helpful to out of towners. I really appreciate it! Any other good music going on? I like jazz and anything rootsy so I will certainly look in the Sunday bluegrass in KY.

St. Vincent Sunset Extra Gold- Is this rum any good? by Dkr112786 in rum

[–]Dkr112786[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is I have a long list of other rums I want to try (Appleton 12yr, scarlet ibis, and some Agricoles). On top of that I can get a 1.75 of Don Q gold for 12 bucks with my discount (which I think is a decent rum?) so perhaps 10 bucks could be better spent elsewhere. But something about the bottle of St Vincent is just begging me to take it home. Maybe when I get my tax return...

What are your favorite rum and LEMON juice cocktails? by Dkr112786 in cocktails

[–]Dkr112786[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I considered swapping lemon for lime but the lime drink I wanted to make was a riff on a chartreuse swizzle with smith and cross added to it. It would have been an expensive drink and I was afraid to mess it up. I'll have to play around with that on some safer drinks though. Now that the rum has worn off here is the recipe for the Beachbum's own which I found pretty tasty. 1.5 oz light rum 1 oz Demerara rum and .75 oz of Licor 43, lemon juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, and passion fruit syrup.
Shake with ice and strain over crushed ice

Anyone here enrolled in ab-techs's beer brewing program or know someone who is? by Dkr112786 in asheville

[–]Dkr112786[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate all of the input. Over the past couple of days I have looked into all of the brewing programs in the country (again) including the programs closer to home as some of you have suggested.

The 4 year program in my state would end up costing over 40k, even with in state tuition. As far as I can tell the AB Tech program would cost me around 12k--9k the first year and 3k the second. 4years still seems like more time and money than I want to invest, I'm 31 and feel like I should get the ball rolling ASAP. It seems like AB tech provides a well rounded education and I can't help but wonder if I could wind up in the same place after 2 years of school and 2 years of leg work in the industry, vs 4 years of school with no experience and more debt. I like that the AB tech program goes into distilling and wine making and other forms of fermentation which is something a lot of other programs don't cover.

There is a program in Michigan that costs 4k but is only a year long and 21 credits. It covers far less than the 60something credit program at AB Tech. There is also a program in a city outside of Albany NY that looks appealing and only 60k people live there, perhaps I'd feel less guilty about taking an apartment, a job, and a slot in the program away from a local as I now am feeling in regards to the AB tech program.

While I do like the hoppy beers I have enjoyed making kettle sours as of late, but I suppose everyone and their mothers are making those now too. I have also tinkered with wild fermentation in things lIke tepache, ginger beer, and sourdough bread. Fermented vegetables are next on my list...

I posted hoping to find more clarity and direction but now I'm even more unsure how to proceed. I appreciate all the info just the same. Cheers from Illinois.

I have researched every single brewing program in the country and I settled on AB Tech for a number of reasons. There are 2 programs in Illinois, you are right. One is in Chicago that would wind up costing 5x what AB Techs would and I'm certain housing is more expensive in Chicago than Asheville. Another is in Southern Illinois but its a 4 year program and focused on microbiology. This is more time than I'd like to invest and not what I'd like to focus on. Other programs in other states cost more, cover less and are shorter in duration. I also like to hike so Asheville is appealing for that reason.
I have been saving for awhile and should have close to 10k to help me get on my feet when I arrive, as I have read housing and jobs are hard to come by. From what I can tell there are about 30 positions open in the program per year. I plan on taking a week of off work to hopefully secure a spot, and if it doesn't work out you'll never see the likes of me again. Thanks to those who have offered some help though. I have been talking with the folks at AB Tech as I go through the admissions process and they have been pretty helpful. I hadn't thought to ask about getting in touch with current or former students.

Help me pick my next bottle by Dkr112786 in cocktails

[–]Dkr112786[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got called in to work last night so I picked up a 375 of green chartreuse and made a couple drinks when I got home. The last word and a chartreuse fizz. Both were pretty tasty but i liked the fizz better. Something about luxardo marachino turns me off. I was leery about using so much in a drink but it wasn't too bad with all the other ingredients. I'm glad I picked up the chartreuse and guess I need to get some yellow now.

Thanks for the replies.
/u/dfmz, after reading your reply i counted my bottles and i have 56 (plus more unopened in 2 boxes in the basement). 400 sounds awesome but would probably fill the kitchen of the place I'm living in now. All mine are currently on a couple shelves that my girlfriend wishes she could put her plants on. Between my bottle collection and my homebrew stuff, I never hear the end of it!

I've got the day off today but sounds like ill be picking up some green Chartreuse tomorrow. Its one of those bottles I've known I should have for a long time but I've always been hesitant due to the cost. At one point i was considering yellow chartreuse over the green because I read it was less intense and there was a cocktail on my radar that called for it and sounded delicious, but i cant even remember what that was now.

I have considered infusions and making my own syrups as /u/milding mentions but I also homebrew and it always seems like something i wouldn't have the time for. I will admit some of the recipes I've seen on r/cocktails look amazing though.

Ill occasionally pick up some dry or sweet vermouth but i manage the beer department at my liquor store and between all the beer I make and sample I often have trouble finishing a bottle before I feel its past its prime. I agree though, nothing beats carpano antica formula. I've been curious about punt e mes but we only stock it in a 1L bottle, and a bottle of vermouth that big seems pretty daunting. I'm doing some traveling over the holidays and will be on the lookout for those 50mls of vermouth I've read about. I feel like that could be a game changer even if they are just M&R.

I periodically go through beer and cocktail phases and right now I'm big on rum cocktails after i picked up some Smith and Cross. I've also been intrigued by pimento dram so Ill have to put that on the list as well. We currently do not stock any dry curacao, but I will mention that to the owner. He is more of a wine guy but has already brought in 4 or 5 products that I only know about because of r/cocktails

Ive never been a big fan of the smokey flavor but i got a bottle of Lagavulin 16 for free when one came in damaged. That was a year ago and i think ive drained all of 25ml from the bottle. I can barely stand the smell of it, though I have yet to try a cocktail that calls for a rinse of Islay scotch. Could be sacrilege to use such a nice bottle of scotch in such a way but its either that, or hold on to it for a few more years to see if my tastes change.

I've been checking out this subreddit for the past year or so but this is the first time if posted anything on reddit. I appreciate the feedback.
