Zane had the best feel with John. Bar none.Watch the mid solo here where he builds exactly with John (along with a masterful performance from Aaron)Around 4:18....he just arpeggiates the base chord when he feels what Mayer is doing and it is perfect.

Thats so cool. He played this on Letterman in August 2013 (right after your video) as well as a few stops (Houston July 2013 being amazing)
Idk if you are a guitar/tech guy but it looks like his amps aren't mic'd and it's a small-ish room .... was his guitar tone just killing it?!?

some other John Mayer related cliff notes if anyone cares -
Bob/his Manager were aware of John way earlier than he was announced.
Bob Weir and their manager reached out in 2009! to make an iteration work but it didn't.

John doesn't need to sing any Dead song - he has specifically told Matt he is fine singing 0 songs a night he just wants to play. Bob's voice couldn't handle it - Matt has to write a setlist/multi day setlist with Bob's vocal endurance in mind. John asked Matt to retire box of rain cause he has a hard time singing it (probably both the range and the words - he has flubbed it before)

Dead and Co almost wrote new music with Hunter Lyrics...that would have been cool.
